I have one of those futon couches and after a recent party I found it quite, shall we say, befouled. Capt Morgan and coke to be exact.
So I was wondering if anyone had suggestions for how to clean this thing. It’s obviously too big for the washer. I was thinking that maybe a steam cleaner would be good, since the coke is all sticky.
Yeah, steam cleaning’s probably your best bet. That’ll get the stickiness out. You might also try that Febreeze stuff. That’s supposed to destroy odors I think. Then get a futon cover (or a bedsheet) to cover up the stain, and you’re money, baby.
well actually, the way you’re supposed to wash a futon is by opening it up, removing all the cotton batting, and washing the loose material in a big tub. Then you wash the cover separately. Then you stuff the futon full of the batting again.
Big pain in the ass if you ask me.
There was a futon seller who told me that he just outright washed and rinsed the whole futon, and dried it out on a bright sunny day. However: Don’t take my word for it. Please. I’m ignorant, really. Ask someone who sells futons, or makes them. Also, not all futons are solid futons - some have a foam core, which might not react as well to certain cleaning methods.
After a quick websearch, sunning the futon on a hot and dry day should do it a world of good.
Totally a pain in the ass, but removing and washing the cotton batting might make it nice and fluffy again. I have recieved a few free futons over the years because they were highly compacted and hard as a rock. It never occurred to me to “refluff” it. It may take a couple of hours to clean and restuff but it is a hell of a lot cheaper than a brand new one. @$100+ for a new one… look at it as getting paid $50/hour to clean it.
