Oh hell yeah. As many of the NFL fans around here may know, I am a raging New York Fanboy, located in southwestern Connecticut. (It is an obvious typo in the OP, but it still bugs the shit out of me.)
As far as allegiances go, generally you get the Yankees/Giants/Rangers fans, and the Mets/Jets/Islanders fans, but as everybody knows, Islander fans are completely without merit. I am a contrarian, being a Giants/Jets/Mets/Rangers fan. Big Blue and Gang Green all the way. In New England proper, you generally find BoSox/Bruins when the NHL isn’t locked out/I think we have an NFL team somewhere around here/Do the Celtics still play? fans. Those worthless pukes who can’t be bothered to even acknowledge the Patriots certainly don’t deserve a dynasty team, but oh well.
Regarding the television broadcast of NFL games, the NFL has national games every week. The national game is broadcast to everybody in the country, except the markets where home team games are playing a different game. Most games are scheduled as 1:00pm starts, when virtually everyone (except those poor suckers on the West Coast) watches their home teams play, and then the 4:00pm games are the national game. For example, last week the national game was the Steelers @ Cowboys, which of course was on at 4:00pm.
Now, there are regulations in place that limit how many games any one market can show. I believe the maximum is 3. When I lived in North Carolina briefly, I recall seeing a bunch of Falcons and Redskins games, but that was the year before the Panthers joined the league.
Where I am, in SW CT, I get all the NYC and Hartford channels. So I get two each of CBS (2 and 3), NBC (4 and 6), ABC (7 and 8), and FOX (5 and 25). This means that I get all the New England games…primarily the Patriots, but Bills if the Pats are off or playing a night game, plus all the NYC games…Giants (at 1:00pm) and Jets (at 4:00pm), plus any major national games.
Last week I got (if I had stayed home) 4 games, and the Giants weren’t even playing. At 1:00pm, the NYC FOX showed the Jets @ 49ers, the Hartford FOX showed the Seahawks @ Patriots, and the Hartford CBS showed the Dolphins @ Bills. The only 4:00pm game was the national Steelers @ Cowboys game, shown on both the NYC and Hartford CBS affiliates.
Occasionally, as happened the week before last, we get the “perfect Sunday”, with two different games at 1:00pm and two different games at 4:00pm, but those are exceedingly rare. But, since I started taping Giants games two seasons ago, I prefer this week’s schedule, where only the Giants are on at 1:00pm, and the Jets and the national game are on at 4:00pm. The national game this week is, of course, Bill Parcells again, Cowboys @ Packers, at 4:00pm.
Basically, any time you see a game other than you’re home game, that’s a national broadcast that most of the rest of the country is also getting.
