How do you disable the Anti-lock brakes on a 94 3.1L Pontiac Grand Am

At low speeds the useless things click two or three times every time I stop. At high speeds the brakes work fine.

I’ve had it in the shop, and the only error message the computer has is a low ABS signal. The brakes, pads, shoes, rotor, drum have all been replaced recently, and the braking system was inspected, and no problems came up. Since I know there is nothing physically wrong with the system, I would like to turn the computer off and use my own judgment in braking.

How would I turn the ABS off?

Thanks for your help.

The answer to your question is you pull the fuse for the ABS system.

But, I would strongly urge you to at least figure out what the problem is. ABS results in dramatically shorter stopping distances because it can do things that humans can’t-- your “judgment” doesn’t factor into it. It also allows you to turn in a skid, so if you live somewhere with winter weather, I would doubley urge you to get this fixed.

Make sure that disabling the ABS doesn’t disable the brakes entirely.

We have a 98 Chevy Venture. I started it one day and got the ABS warning light and the pedal went all the way to the floor. Turns out when the control unit packed it in, it disabled the entire braking system. Lucky for me, I was in the driveway and not moving.

Oh, don’t worry about that, my right hoof is antilocking, and when I slow down, my butt cheeks light up.

How many times a second can your right foot pump the brakes? The ABS pump can do it something like 30 times per second.

Yeah yeah… we got along for years without 'em, but how bad would you feel if you got in a crash that would have been prevented by them because you didn’t spend a few bucks or so to get them going? (granted, if it were a broken modulator which might cost many hundreds of dollars, I might be more sympathetic, but this sounds like it’s probably a wheel sensor which will probably cost more like $150).

And IANAL, YMMV, etc, but what happens if you get in a serious crash and they wonder why the ABS didn’t kick in and notice someone pulled the fuse?

If you plan to disable ABS, and it works for you, check your auto insurance. If you get into an accident with your ABS disabled, and your insurance company finds out, you could be in a world of financial hurt.
