Inspired by the thread about Trader Joe’s a few weeks ago, I picked up one of their Cuban seasoned wraps and brought it to work for lunch today. It came with a little cup of mustard sauce. Whenever I get a cup of sauce with a wrap I’m never quite sure how to apply the sauce to the wrap. I ended up dipping the corner of the wrap in the sauce before each bite. I’ve experienced this situation before with the wraps they often sell onboard planes which usually come with a cup of dressing, and the burritos from the food truck that comes to office at lunch time which come with a cup of salsa. I’m curious if my way of eating them is “normal”.
If the sauce in question is thick enough (near mayo consistancy) that it is unlikely to be a drippy mess, I prefer to unwrap the burrito enough that I can distribute the sauce throughout.
If the sauce is too runny to permit this, I dip as you describe.
I rarely eat burritos, but, when I do, that is what I do. I take the first bite without sauce, then pour a little bit at a time in the opening as I continue eating.
I get a giant syringe with a 1-foot needle, suck up the sauce, shove the needle in the burrito axially, and slowly retract it while dispensing the sauce.
Well, not really, but that’s what I always wanted to do.
I chose “Pour a little sauce on the part I’m about to eat, take a bite, repeat,” but that only applies to burritos that can be hand-held, like Taco Bell. Sometimes, if the burrito is built so that it’s possible to unwrap it, pour in the sauce, and then re-wrap, I’ll do that.
If it’s a big, messy burrito that has to be eaten with a fork and knife, I’ll pour the sauce on.
I think this would be the apex of burrito technology.
For me, the ideal solution is to order the burrito or wrap the way you like it. Put the damn sauce inside when you’re making it and eat away. That said, there’s plenty of burrito joints that are worthy of the business but have the Achilles heel that their salsas are too damn bland, watery or otherwise unsatisfactory. In those cases (and when I am applying Fire sauce to something from the Bell) I dab my own hot sauce onto eat bite as I eat it. Dipping is a disaster waiting to happen and disassembling a properly seared burrito is a non-starter, you can only manage that with a dogshit Mission-style wrap.
I chose ‘other’ but I also do the option where I squirt a little sauce from a Taco Bell packet into the bite hole area.
The reason I chose other is because when I eat Taco Bell burritos the first thing I generally do before eating one is unwrap it enough to squire a packet or two of sauce along the length of in the inside of the burrito, then roll it back up and enjoy it.
*by the way, does anyone else wish they would bring back the Chili Cheese Burrito? I loved those things!
