How do you feel about dogs in an eating establishment?

<Xander Harris> Dog spit is cleaner than human </Xander Harris>

Sorry, but it ain’t so.

Completely irrelevant, there’s never a bad time for a Buffy quote.

I’d definitely love it, and would become a frequent patron. I love watching animals interact with each other and people, and I just don’t think they’re gross. It amuses me that the OP is squicked out by the water bowls.

It also amuses me that Runs with Scissors stops at this place that grosses him out twice a week and also mentions that he “still has to eat there.” (Although he admits he doesn’t have to in the next paragraph.) Really, you have to? If it bothers you so much, why do you purchase things there so frequently?

I sure wouldn’t mind it at an outdoor establishment or at the tables at the sidewalk, or possibly even a very casual indoor establishment, but indoors and upscale would weird me out a little. Thing is, in the yuppie town I live in, the kind of person who trains their dog really well doesn’t bring their dog to a restaurants and the kind of person who brings their dog to a restaurant would be the kind who would never believe that Precious could ever scare or hurt anyone, and should be allowed everywhere. I have no problem with well-behaved dogs, it just seems that the people who have poorly-behaved dogs are the ones who take them to inappropriate places.

Depends how they cook them.

I honestly would prefer dogs over children in places.

I think you are wrong on this presumption. Dog people can be a crazy breed and a place like a coffee shop where it’s probably common for people to step in while walking their dogs to grab a morning coffee is going to develop a pretty loyal following if the Starbucks across the street kicks the dog walkers out.

That said, I’m not a big fan of the concept. Not for any huge hygienic reason, but because I’m allergic and they usually end up getting in the way and stepped on.

It doesn’t bother me. If I went there, I might bring my own water bowl for the dog, though.

In a perfect world, I would like it if it were clear up front that dogs are welcome so you would know to expect a lot of dogs. That way, you could know to go somewhere else if your allergies were acting up, or you were with a person who was uncomfortable around dogs, or whatever. There should be dog-friendly places to eat, and no dog places to eat, and they wouldn’t overlap so that you could always make your decision based on dog or no dog and never end up surprised either way.

While I’ve never been to Kelly’s, I do know that dogs are allowed on patios at eating places there. I regularly frequented the Flying Star back when there was only one of them*, and there were always dogs there. Hell, I remember when the one on Juan Tabo opened up and they put a big (ugly, IMHO) greyhound scuplture on one patio to differentiate between the “dogs allowed” and “no dogs” patios. I think that scuplture might even still be there. I don’t live there anymore, and don’t pay attention when I visit. Flying Star’s not my favorite place to go, but many of my friends like it so I do get there at least once a long visit.

What I was actually trying to say was that I’m not sure it’s legal to allow non-service animals inside an establishment that serves food. I’ve seen it in a few places, and never mind it, but I do wonder if those establishments are risking their business.

*It used to be called the Double Rainbow back then, and was even when they opened up the Juan Tabo site. To this day, I think of it as the Double Rainbow and had to use Google to get the correct name of the place.

A friend of mine just got back from 2 months in France, one of her major observations was that dogs are EVERYWHERE. Resturants, cafes, shops, dogs were all over the place.

I love dogs and have never lived in a home without one so I would be more the happy with the situation the OP described.

I also have never washed the dog’s water bowl- rinsed it yes, but never washed it with soap. Mind you the dog and I share my dinner most nights (she gets the left overs off my plate…it’s not like we eat together!) so I don’t exactly come with a neutral position.

Don’t open the shoes-in-the-house can of worms, dude.

You do realize, don’t you, that some people actually allow these filthy creatures in their homes?!?
I don’t have a problem with the idea of one or two restaurants or coffee shops catering to the niche market of those who want to bring their dogs in with them, as long as there are plenty of alternative places for people who are bothered by the idea.

I second this. I like dogs, but behaving in place filled with other dogs, strange people, food, and strange people carrying lots of plates of food, will test even a well-trained one. And there are more than enough clueless dipshits around to make the whole experience miserable (or even painful) for everyone.

I’d go there. I’m a dog-lover. If I’m not around my own dogs I like being around someone else’s.

Santo Rugger - In the summer I scrub out my horses troughs about once a week, with a scrub brush (no soap). I just scrubbed them this weekend, although they won’t get scummy in the winter, so it’ll be a while before I do it again.

gatopescado - What a sad, sterile world you must live in.

You eat at restaurants, don’t you? Do you know what goes on in the kitchens there? I do. I worked professionally in one for 10 years.

Are you sure that knife, fork and plate are sufficiently santized? There’s a good chance they are not.

At least with dogs, I know what to expect. This wasn’t asking about your feelings towards the dogs, but of the establishment. Please take your rants to the pit.

Your toothbrush is in your bathroom , is it not? If so, you brush your teeth with “ass-leavings” every day (assuming you brush, of course).

I love dogs - if they are clean and well behaved, I’d have no problem with them in a restaurant. Usually, most people I see aren’t as clean or well behaved as most animals.

Don’t like it a bit. If they sit still and be quiet maybe, but who’s going to leave in the middle of a meal when their dog starts getting restless?

I would definitely go out of my way to give my business to a place that allows dogs. I would assume this would be a casual place. I take my dog everywhere that I am allowed to. He’s a 12 pound rat terrier/chihuahua. Really ugly but well behaved. Most laid back cafes let me have him flop in my lap while I eat or he’ll just flop on my feet. Bloomingdales and nordstroms also allow all dogs which is nice.

Most places in my neighborhood have water bowls outside for dogs. It offends you that they are washed with the human dishes? How filthy exactly do you think dogs are? This sounds like the most anal retentive thing I’ve ever heard. You know what I think is filthy? Seeing other people’s precious little monsters scratch their behinds or not wash their hands after going to the restroom and then touching everything and spreading pink eye across the land. Children are the worst germ vehicles ever.

That’s horrible! What, are you from Korea or something?

I wouldn’t eat in a place that had dogs in it. I’m not fond of dogs, and I’d spend my entire meal concerned with where the dog is and if it was planning on grabbing my food. Not entirely rational, I realize, but it would ruin my enjoyment of the meal.
