There’s a coffee shop I stop at about twice a week. They allow dogs inside, and every day there are dogs in there. (They serve sweet and savory food items as well.)
I think for me, it’s the “ick” factor. I figure children are probably filthier than dogs. Of course, technically, every establishment allows dogs because guide dogs are allowed everywhere.
The other thing that bothers me are the dog dishes inside and outside the place. Where are these washed? Again, I realize that I could be just as grossed out eating with utensils and on plates that thousands of other people have used. Presumably everything gets washed and sanitized. But the thought of those dog dishes going back into the kitchen area just really skeeves me out.
I don’t see a lot of difference between places that only allow pets at the tables on the sidewalk. I still have to eat there.
And, of course, I don’t have to eat there. But if I owned a restaurant, I would guess that the customers I’d deter by allowing dogs inside would be greater than the customers I’d gain by allowing dogs.
I don’t own any pets, and if I did, I wouldn’t take them to a place even if dogs were allowed. Just because you can doesn’t mean you should.
The part about the dishes is weird. They actually feed the dogs in the place? I used to go to Holland a lot and there are some enormous dogs there and people take them into bars and some small restaurants and that never bothered me at all. The dogs just get under the table and stay there. (As an aside, the best trained bunch of animals you’ll ever meet) Anyway, that never bothered me at all. I like dogs and don’t mind them around me but I don’t think I’d care for the restaurant feeding them on the premises.
Doesn’t bother me, as long as the atmosphere is sufficiently casual and the dog is reasonably clean and well-behaved. I’m certainly not worried about “dog germs”.
But I live with two dogs in the house, so I may not be the best judge.
Are they well-behaved? If so, I couldn’t care less. I did think it was illegal to have any pets in any restaurants in the States (excepting service animals), and maybe it is in some places and not in others.
I am with DoctorJ that I would have expectations of a casual atmosphere if a dog was there, but that’s about it.
Water bowls. I would think they’d have to get washed some time. I wouldn’t want my dog (if I had one) drinking out of a dish that other dogs have been drinking out of if it weren’t washed once in a while.
I have taken my dog to tons of restaurants. I had a guide in-training and he was allowed everywhere I went (not legally, but by custom). The worst he did was startle the wait staff because they didn’t notice him until he got restless near the end of the meal. He just squished into a space under the table and took a nap or tried to eat microscopic paper scraps.
I think that its weird to be grossed out by dishes that other species have touched, especially with how gross some people are, but maybe that’s just me.
A coffee shop, bar, or open air cafe? I wouldn’t care if a dog were in any of those establishments as long as it was well-behaved and clean. I’d probably feel uncomfortable in any other kind of eating establishment, though.
I am not opposed to it, but I am surprised that this establishment is aloud to to do this. Around these parts, dogs aren’t allowed anywhere near people that are eating. Hell, the coffee shop I frequent won’t even let them be near the outdoor tables on the sidewalk. We have to wait on the other side of the parking lot while my sister goes in and gets our coffee. They say it violates health codes.
As long as the dogs are clean and well-behaved, I don’t mind them in restaurants or other public places. I think that having good dogs around the place sort of relaxes me. I love bookshops that have resident cats, too.
If you want to share your cheeseburger with your shihtzu who is sitting in your bra cleavage, I don’t care. I think you are silly but I bet your immune system is better than most in the place.
Oh, never mind then. Giving a dog a bowl of water doesn’t bother me. I was thinking of them having some kind of extra menu for dogs or something.
I like large, well-behaved dogs and don’t have any problems with them laying under the table or anything.
I would never eat there. Filthy, filthy, filthy. How does this place pass inspection? What “grade” does it display? A “D”, I would guess, for “Dog” , “Disgusting” and “Dirty”.
*You know, a dog can’t wipe its asshole, so I figure everywhere he sits (or licks- since they are always licking thier asshole, or drags his ass across) is defacto toilet paper, whether it be your couch, carpet or bedspread. I choose not to live on a filthy animals ass leavings. Wouldn’t want to eat in his Port-a-Dump, either.
I’ve never “washed” my dog’s bowl in her life. I mean, I’ve swirled water in the bottom and dumped it out, but I’d never use soap in it. I grew up with “ranch” dogs, and their water was the drips from the outdoor faucet. It had moss growing in the bottom, they didn’t give a shit. And I can’t imagine emptying out the horse troughs to wash them. We might have sprayed them out in the spring, but I don’t remember.
Dogs are allowed on the patio of Kelly’s, a brewery on central in Albuquerque. I’ve been there when there were 10 dogs and 60 people out there.
I suppose as long as proper precautions are taken, it’s okay. I remember an episode of “It’s Me or the Dog” (an English “Dog Whisperer”) where one badly behaved dog would constantly eat anything in sight, including things on the counter. (And was in the habit of eating its own feces.) They tested the kitchen and found it had traces of E. Coli…I seriously re-evaluated how I looked at eating around dogs. They may not be carrying awful germs/diseases, but they definitely are less discriminating about things than we.
I wouldn’t care one bit, in fact I’d prefer it. Dogs are awesome. Here in NYC dogs are allowed in many stores anyway so it’s not like it would be out of place.
Resteraunts that allow dogs get lots of points with me. I lived in Vienna for a while, and it is common place there, even in fairly upscale places…the kind where taking kids is frowned upon. I never saw a dog cause any trouble.
Theres not a sidewalk within 30 miles of my house. And I don’t wear the shoes that have mud/spit/piss/shit(mine, coyotes or anyone else’s) on them in the parts of the house I eat or sit in, either. I’m a dirty old bastard, but I’m clean.
