How do you feel about the towtruck industry...

and why?

The original quote was “How do you feel about the tow truck industry good or bad and why.” I think I’ve kept the original punctuation (or lack thereof) relatively intact as well.

Why do you ask?

My few experiences with towing have led me to think that “industry” has more than its share of opportunists.

When we lived in Seattle, we had cars stolen four times. (These were older cars, and we just had liability insurance, nothing for property damage.)

Twice, the cars were found close to an auto junkyard that also provided towing service.

The cars were damaged enough that we couldn’t justify fixing them. Stuff taken out of the dash, back seat removed, headliner torn up, distributor cap or battery gone, etc.

Since we couldn’t just leave the cars where they were found, we ended up having them towed to the junkyard, and we “sold” the cars to the owner for parts, minus the towing charges.

We couldn’t help but wonder if someone at the junkyard hadn’t found a new source of parts, and had stolen the cars in the first place.

But they sure come in handy when you slide into a ditch and can’t get out. The tow truck folks here in Iowa seem to be caring, reasonable people.

Away, hey, tow 'em away! The Lincoln Park Pirates are here!

Out here in suburbia where you don’t generally get towed unless you’re parked in a hospital zone or something, the only experiences I’ve had with tow-truck drivers were post-vehicles breakdown. A little pricey at ~$65 per tow, but I guess that’s the going rate since in the three times I’ve had to pay a driver, it was right about there regardless of the tow company.

Last driver I dealt with was a decent guy if a little odd (so it goes with tow-truck drivers in my experience). If nothing else, he was willing to tow the car to my home on my word that I had money there to pay him with. He was also rather patient when neither myself or Talera could provide a check for him (due to a recent move, neither of us has matching checks with driver’s licenses). Finally, I used my debit card. Oh, my point - he didn’t give me any crap the whole time though I must of seemed amazingly incompentent.

“I guess one person can make a difference, although most of the time they probably shouldn’t.”

OMG…I remember that guy, Opal! For a second I thought you were serious. Then I remembered…

For those who were not on the old AOL board: Some whacko weirdo posted this very question about 10 times, in a variety of different threads, on the old board. People replied to his post, but apparently he didn’t notice and just kept asking the question over…and over…and over again.

Glad to see you’re feeling better, Opal.
