To cut a long story short (because I am fed up) I am trying to set reminders in outlook.
The time comes, nothing, the time passes, nothing. not even a slight read of the hard disk or blink of the cursor. NOTHING AT ALL!
It’s fucking anoying because if it worked, it would be very useful at my job. It should be fucking simple - open a new reminder, give it a name, set a time, and save. I have done all that, and tried every other option, I’ve looked in the help file, checked all the options, checked the sound settings, tried using the calendar instead of the ‘tasks’
This Microwank product is apathetic?
Shouldn’t have to do that (what good is it if the doing anything whatsoever of a reminder depends on the status of some option you wouldn’t know to check unless someone told you) but I did check that. (‘default reminder’) that was in the help article.
I did a screen capture of my own Outlook page for you. Note that in the outlook window, just below the words “start time” and “end time” is a checkbox labeled “reminder”. You need to be sure to check that box, and set your desired time interval. Also note all the overdue reminders behind that window (they actually come up on top, but I clicked on the Outlook window so you could see it better). Outlook can only work when you have the program open, so be sure that you are running outlook and at least keep the minimized version on your taskbar at all times. If you have trouble remembering to open it, set up your computer to open Outlook when it starts windows.
I hope that solves your problem, otherwise it’s out of my league.
I should say I am pretty technically minded and don’t usually let software get the better of me. Anything you might think of asking me to check I probably checked, that is why this is a rant in the pit rather than a question in GQ. But I welcome help and thank those who have(and may still) try.
Oh. I have just been ‘reminded’ that one of them is overdue by 8 minutes, and the other by one hour. well that’s very very useful outlook! remind me AFTER the event! really fucking useful!
It ‘remembered’ my reminders when I double clicked one, and then clicked on the ‘recurrance’ button (which would be irrelevant in the case of these reminders)
I get reminders of shit I have put off for months. It’s really fucking easy.
If it’s not that easy, get a book on it rather than complain about it. Shit.
If my parents can figure it out, anyone can. My parents are not computer smart at all, hell I have to tell them when their connection is down and that’s WHY they can’t download email.
BTW, I know some people who ARE NOT technically minded that figured out the company calendar for the conference room I set up when I was in IT administration…I showed them once where to go…
If they can figure it out, you can learn by some trial and error or reinstall the program. I don’t mean to sound like a snot but shit. if my parents can figure out the basics of Outlook, anyone can. My step-mom is incredibly “stupid” and admits it to computer items.
So, if I am technically minded, and I can’t get this to work it must be broken.
BTW, don’t get your knickers in a twist about people complaining. complaining is what the pit is for!
That is also what the pit is for… for people that can’t get past the idea that they left behind common sense to do things like:
Uninstall the program (since you are so technically minded)
Reinstall the program
Double check that you set it up right (since you are so technically minded, it’s never an individual’s fault or the computer its self’s fault…always MS’s fault.)
If all else fails put to blame again what a POS that Outlook is considering millions of users have it right. I could never be the fault of your own…no it wasn’t your fault or an issue with your OS or even, god forbid your machine.
Hell, been running Outlook on this machine for 3 years, runs like a dream, sometimes to my dismay to remind me to pay a bill.
So if I get my “knickers in a twist about people complaining” I can only go off the hundreds of times I have installed such a program like Outlook and know the sucesses. Pretty much 98% success with Outlook. If there was a problem, it was my stupid issue. I just find people that are “technically knowledgable” to be dangerous, they know more than they should and make more of a deal than it is.
If you want a good install, rather than complain, go to MS’s site and look for the problem. WHO KNOWS you may need a new cd. Hell your OS may have had a bad install and you don’t know it…however, my parents who are not computer knowledgable have Outlook programs they both understand, they work and you know why??? Because they had someone that REALLY knows MS, Outlook, Office, etc…and not one that claims to have knowledge and gives up at the weakest point.
Rather than complain, get knowledgable, it’s pretty easy stuff. But my knickers aren’t in a twist if my damn parents can figure it out.
I cannot uninstall the program as I don’t have it, because I am at work, and it is on a mail server, and I don’t know the settings or names to ‘re attach’ it to the mail server once I re install from the CD I don’t have! (even if I did, why should I go to the trouble?)
Well why isn’t it fucking working then?!
Did you think to ask what version I was running? Maybe your version is different than mine. (mine is 2002).
I am not saying “I know I am right so it must be broken” as a ‘knowledgable person’ I was saying it as sarcasm.
Huh? I pasted something completelly irrelevant into the quote code.
:smack: :smack:
And finally techchick - didn’t you KNOW it is fashionable to complain incoherently and irrationaly about Microsoft products???
I have double, triple, and quadruple check I set it up right. I have set test after test after test. I have searched here and there.
Here is one of the things I tried…
open ‘tasks’ on the left.
double click ‘click here to add new task’ (a new window opens)
type a name for the task.
tick the ‘reminder’ box.
enter the time I want to be reminded.
visually check the date is correct.
clicked ‘save and close’. (it then appears on the list of tasks)
so what am I doing wrong?
On other tests I tried entering the due date and start date. on yet others I tried setting the priority to high. I tried setting recurring. I checked ‘default reminder’ was on.
IT COULD WELL BE that I have missed something in this case. but I do not appreciate you patronising me and pidgeonholing me as one of the ones who thinks he knows software. I work with people who ‘think they know software’ Believe me I am not one of them. I WRITE software.
I would ask your IT admin…I would ask your IT admin why certain things don’t work. Unfortunately or fortunately, depends on the situation, your admin has a lot of controls over what can and can’t be done…so in this instance, I recommend a talk to your supervisor or you talk to your IT Admin why they don’t allow it…but since you can’t directly affect the outcome of the calendar, the taskes etc… quit your whining, the IT admins of your company have control over what you can and can’t do. Yet another reason to not complain.
I could easily go to my dad’s house and make things difficult. So AGAIN, rather than complain, if you need the “appointment” or “task” thing to pop up, you need to confront your IT system with it.
I could easily do so much shit to their Outlook 2000, it’s not even funny but that’s not me. So, if it’s so important to you, confront your IT department and get all that changed. I find it funny to complain about this kind of thing on a message board considering you can easily block out a time of your boss for an appointment to discuss whatever and he/she sees it and it’s blocked…
Give it up, that or concede to what your bosses are expecting. If it doesn’t work because of bullshit they think is right, you have choices, leave or deal with it. eh?
I have been self-employed since 1997…we all have our choices in life. Sorry to be such a snot again but reality is, you either work with the systems or you go out on your own. It’s your decision.
I’m going to weigh in on the side of the OP. I worked for a year and a half at a company that used Outlook. I set reminders for our weekly meetings, but got rid of them after I realized it was part of a Rube Goldberg-ian pile of programming that ended up (like Lobsang’s 2nd post there), telling me exactly how late I was for stuff it hadn’t reminded me about.
Ok I give up with it.
(BTW - my tech guys would probably have as much of a clue as me)
FYI - It’s not that important to me (hence me posting to a message board about it rather than kicking up a real fuss)
And I am sorry if I got my knickers in a twist. It comes as a surprise when someone takes a pit thread (of mine) seriously,
AIA - I have managed to set reminders in the past. It was quite easy then. but then it was on a different machine.
I really think this installation is dodgy as the reminders ‘happen’ when I double clicked the task in calendar to edit it, but it said ‘overdue’,
