How do you get mothball stink out of wool?

I bought some really groovy Italian Army wool blankets at my local army surplus store, but man do they reek to the high heavens of mothballs. Ewwww.

I think that they would be excellent for the camping adventure I’ve got planned for the upcoming long weekend, but there’s no way that I’m gonna share a tent with these stinky things.

Can I put them in a washing machine? Would that completely destroy them? They are army stuff, so I can’t see them as being too delicate.

Right now they are airing out in the sun on my balcony, but I think I need something a liitle more effective.

Any help would be appreciated!

If your afraid to try wahing them in cold water and woolite on the gentle cycle, try using Febreze or something similar. I find that it works really well on lots of very strong odors. Spray the blankets heavely and let them dry, in the sun does help, it you can do it. Good luck.
