How do you get stink stains out of a plastic coffee mug?

I have a 20 ounce plastic mug from Speedway that I use about 3 times a week for coffee. By buying it for $1.99 I get 59cent coffee in it instead of paying 89cents. I usually drink a combo of half dark roast with half premium blend coffee.
The mug is washed after every use. First it’s rinsed out several times, then it’s washed in the dish washer.

Recently I’ve noticed it has this BAD stink stain I can’t wash out of it. The inside wreaks of old, stale coffee, and it’s starting to affect the taste of fresh coffee. I’ve rinsed the living hell out of it, scrubbed it with soap, and rewashed it in the dish washer multiple times.

I would have thought the cup would have lasted more that a month. Before I take out a second mortgage and shell out a whopping $1.99 for a new cup ( :p) does anyone have any ideas on how to get the old stale coffee smell out?

Soak it for half an hour with a hot bleach:water mix 1:4.

I use a product called Lift Off 3 that I get at Home Depot.
It’s made to remove graffitti, but works on all sorts of stains.
It’s biodegradable.

Squink’s idea will work. You could also try soaking in white vinegar for a bit, too. There are commerically made products to get old coffee out of carafes, mugs, etc, but they are aimed at the restaurant industry and you’d have to order from a restaurant supply company.

<nitpick> FYI, it’s “reeks.”

I usually use two denture cleaning tablets soaked with hot water… usually clears these types of stains in 1 or 2 passes.

Is this by chance an insulated type coffee mug? Assuming it is, I have seen a problem with these, especially after dishwasher washing. The mug is made in two parts, the inner liner and the outer shell, which are usually ultrasonically bonded together. This is not the strongest bond in the cupboard, so to speak. I don’t know if this is the case with yours, but it happens that some liquid gets trapped in the space between the two parts where it turns into a horrifically disgusting yuck. The only solution I found was to chuck it and buy a new one.

ps, I discovered it because I could hear a slight sloshing sound when the cup was empty. Not washing in the dishwasher seemed to extend their useful lives somewhat

WREAK: To inflict
The mug is inflicting a bad odor upon my olfactory.

 Alright, alright. You’re right. The proper word is Reek!
