{Humor} A Belt Sanders Are Not A Valid Answer! {/Humor}
Hello All
Here is my problem.
A couple of months ago I installed a CD-RW drive in the home computer.
Burning regular CD-R disks for music or data is no problem, but every time I have tried to format a CD-RW disk for packet writing (so that I can use the disk as a honking big floppy) the software locks up and then the beast crashes.
This coasters the disk and worse if I reinsert the disk later it crashes the machine again.
Now I have about 20 disks (different brands) that I need to try to erase by hand.
I have read in a FAQ on the web about being able to erase this type of disk with a special type of light sourse(PROM eraser lamp).
Does anybody know of another way?
Thanks
Peace

LIONsob,
The UV erasers that you’re talking about use special florescents. You won’t find them at your local Wal Mart. Unless you know someone who programs and erases EPROMs in bulk, then you’re out of luck on this front. It’s not a very reliable way to erase a CDRW anyway, unless you’re willing to expose the disc for many hours.
It sounds like your corrupted discs are trying to auto-play and that’s causing your crashes. Fire up your CDRW writer software BEFORE you insert the CDRW discs you want to erase. This should disable the auto-play feature and let you erase the discs with your CDRW drive, which is a much more reliable way to clear the discs. If that doesn’t work, try holding down the SHIFT key when you insert the disc - that’s supposed to turn off auto-play (though I’ve never actually tried this trick). There’s another method involving a registry edit… but I don’t think we want to go there…
Hope that helps.
have you tried doing this with DirectCD or Prassi ABCD?
They should both have an option for formatting (for packet writing/drag and drop) and erase, (for erasing, including the formatting).
Here are the instructions to disable your autoplay-
[li]Right-Click on My Computer > Click Properties[/li][li]Choose the Device Manager tab[/li][li]Click the [+] next to CD-ROM[/li][li]Double-Click on your CD-ROM Drive[/li][li]Choose the Settings tab[/li][li]Remove the check from the box next to[/li][li]Auto Insert Notification to disable AutoPlay[/li][li]Click OK > Click OK > Answer Yes to Restart[/li][li]CD AutoPlay is now disabled[/li]
I believe JoeyBlades is right.
Sounds like the autoplay is the problem.
This will also save cpu time because it will not try to detect a cd ever 1-15 seconds.
If you arent using 98 post what OP system you are using and I’ll give you a link.
