From Toronto, are ya?
And yeah, they disappoint most of the time, but it’s a fun ride to disappointment!

betenoir – Note that I’m not saying winter is here, just that winter is coming. I would adore fall – there’s nothing at all like the crispness of a nice fall day – except that it means that winter is coming, and I hate winter. I hate the cold and the lack of sunlight. Don’t get me started on snow. So therefore I can’t enjoy fall whole-heartedly.
Despite caramel apples.
Speaking of food – I had my sister and her husband over for dinner on Saturday; I made pork chops and roasted sweet potatoes – and they brought the last fresh sweet corn I’ll have this year. The ears were noticeably small; they’d asked for a half dozen at the farm stand, and they threw in another dozen in addition because they were so small.
How do I know that winter is coming?
When you buggers on the SD start complaining about bushfires in California, air-conditioning problems and stinky people on the trains and buses.
The spaceheater is out, baby! And the long fleece bathrobe. And the long-sleeve T-shirts. And I’m considering making Reuben Sammiches this week. I never do that during the summer.
I was thinking of starting a thread like this a few weeks ago because of the animals around me. My dog (Siberian Husky) and the horses (1 Welsh Pony, 1 half Arabian, the rest of the herd are all Thoroughbreds) are getting their fuzzy winter coat. Oh silly puppy and ponies, we live in Houston! We still have the a/c on. Fortunately for Misha, he’s an inside dog. We have noticed that he’s wanted to spend more time outside as of late, though.
Well, the 29 inches of snow 2 weekends ago was a heads up. Managed to stick both our SUVs and had to fire up the plow truck.
It’s Columbus day today. Last year on this day we got snowed in. Actually took the day off of work. Got about 2 - 2 1/2 feet and I really didn’t feel like fighting it since its sort of a holiday for us anyway.
Winter. There is a feel in the air, a look in the sky and a slant to the sun. I tend to pay more attention to things that are outside that must be taken care of before the snow really flies.
When I start to see the annual migration of boats down 12 from the Chain of Lakes. It’s sad…
Our daytime high is only going to be in the mid 80s today. And last night the temps fell into the 60s overnight.
Pass me the parka!
Winter’s coming because I’ve had to scrape the car windows a few times now. There was one day this week where I both arrived at and left work in the dark (and the days will be getting shorter for another 2 1/2 months! ). Oh, and looking out the window I see that the last of the leaves are just barely hanging on. It was only a week or two ago that they started changing colours! That was quick.
I know Winter is coming because George RR Martin has said so… repeatedly.
In Phoenix, we know Winter is on the way when you can park your car in the sun, leave it there for an hour or two and not feel your eyeballs burn up with you get in to drive it.
Even better. Detroit.
Um…take me with you? No snow?
looks pathetic
When they start spraying that white stuff in store windows.
As if anybody really ever believed it was snow.
Yep. Looks like I may have to get the winter jacket out Wednesday. I’ve put off wearing a jacket so far, getting by on the occasional sweater sneaking its way into my wardrobe (today, for instance). But Wednesday the predicted high temp is 38. That’s not too bad actually, so I may still get by with just a sweater. We shall see.
Oh, there’s plenty of snow. You just have to drive for a couple of hours to get to it.
Can we work out some kind of snowbird timeshare, maybe?
We’ve got our first frost warning on the south side of the north fork, tonight. Yay, hooray! (Being originally from north Idaho, this is a couple of weeks late. So be it.)
I describe this time of year as being that brief grocery-shopping interval between “get home before the ice cream melts” and “get home before the lettuce freezes”.
