Hooray! The cold weather appreciation thread

Naysayers need not post :stuck_out_tongue:

I am so happy that it’s getting cold! I actually get giggly when it is cold. I love winter, and that means I love autumn because it means WINTER IS COMING!!

We’re supposedly due for a good winter this year, which we deserve considering the pathetic last couple of years.

Autumn has finally hit here too. I’ve had my windows open for the last 3 days - the house is getting a good airing. I’ll be able to do the transplanting that I had to put off when it was so freekin’ hot out! My electric bill will plummet because I don’t have to have the A/C on all the time.

Life is good!

It gets too freaking cold in Taiwan, but it never, ever snows. That sucks.

On the bright side, it ain’t humid, broiling, or mosquito-infested when it’s cold…

I’m OK with cold weather. I quite like it. I enjoy getting all wrapped up in coats and shawls and hats and the like. I like wearing wool stockings.

But I like it to come on gradually. Middle of last week it was getting to 22°C outside (71 fahrenheit) - summer clothes plus maybe a wee cardigan. This week it’s been 8°C outside (46 fahrenheit). That’s too big a temperature change. I am not adjusting well.

I so totally agree. The heat is just so oppressive, and for guys, you simply can’t wear anything comfortably and look good when it’s hot.

The Fall and Winter, you have fashions to choose from, you don’t get hot, you can layer your clothing, and you can freeze yer but off to your heart’s delight (except for when my wife visited last weekend, it hasn’t been over 65 degrees in my house in three weeks).

I get up every morning and look outside with excitement and anticipation to see if it has snowed overnight. Last night we had a skim of slushy snow on the cars and porches. Still not sticking in the grass yet but it will soon. My favorite season is Fall but winter is a close second. I love the crisp clear days and the icy cold nights, makes it nice to snuggle with my wife. Or hang out in front of the fireplace ad just relax.

Summer… bah you can keep it, it would come in a distant 4th. We live in the Northern tip of the lower peninsula of MI. Keep trying to get my wife convinced that we need to live in the Upper Peninsula.

No more suffocating hot muggy days! The leaves are turning, the grass doesn’t need to be mowed any more, and I get to go skiing again!!

What else? Well, there’s snowmobiling, there’s making a snowfort in the front yard with my son, and there’s skiing.

More? OK - snowball fights, clear crisp nights to lay in the snow and look at the stars, and did I mention skiing?

Plus I can head for the back lot of the mall and do donuts with the CoderMobile, watch the cats try to go outside while trying to not touch the snow, and… well - you know.

Yay! It’s 54 degrees F outside right now. I like it when it’s chilly. (Blustering cold, no.) I like wearing sweaters and hoodies, and the thought of getting out my leather jacket just tickles me.

Of course, I live in Charleston, so usually it’s 70-75 degrees every afternoon until January. Winters here are from January until April. :frowning:

I’ve really got to get to Baltimore.

I like fall, but winter sucks. I just hate the slush, wind, cold, drifts, WIND again, ice, bulky clothes, and frigid temperatures for 6 months. On the other hand, I love the fireplace, my new boots, sweaters, kitties who want to cuddle up…I guess it has its good points.

Four words, for me:

The. Wasps. Are. Dead.

You remember the Calvin and Hobbes strip in which Calvin rejoices at the arrival of autumn because “bugs are dying by the truckload!” That’s me. Except only about wasps.

Kamikazee, we’re almost neighbors. I’m downstate near Lansing right now, but grew up in TC. Hmmm… Snowdope? Skidope?

Hmmpphh.

[Eve turns her back and mutters many “nays” under her breath, which is visible in this goddam weather]

Hooray for brisk weather!

I hate, hate, hate the heat. I love waking up snuggled under my down blankets in a really chilly bedroom.

Plus, Autumn/Winter means corduroys, short wool skirts with tights and tall leather boots, leather pants, ribbed turtlenecks, chunky sweaters, wool pea coats, cashmere twin-sets, leather jackets and wool pea coats.

Hooray for brisk weather!

Yup, you do. Then we can have Yooperdope.

It’s my first fall in da UP since the fall of 1990, and I’m LOVING it. I’m just so thrilled to be back somewhere where there’s weather. Everyday, I get up and look out the window to see what’s out there. Sometimes it’s rainy, sometimes sunny, sometimes lately there’s frost on the ground. It smells like fall. The colors are at their peak. Life is GOOD!

I’m really looking forward to winter this year. Where I used to live in Colorado got a teeeny tiny little bit of winter. Sometimes there’d be snow. But it’s nothing like here - last winter Marquette got 300 inches. Three hundred! I’m hoping we get that and more this year.

I am always glad to see the summer go. I surely don’t miss the heat and the sweaty discomfort that comes with it (I have no A/C in my house). I just love the feel of taking a walk on a cold, frosty fall morning, walking through fallen leaves that crackle at your feet. Coming back home and enjoying a cup of hot chocolate afterwards to warm up is one of life’s simple pleasures.

And yes, I welcome the winter, too, but it’s a lot better if we have snow, especially around Christmas. Ever since I was a kid it I always felt that it just didn’t seem quite like Christmas if there wasn’t some snow on the ground. As a skier, I also welcome the snow for this reason.

Uh, Athena??? The location in your profile? Up there… a bit left… Yeah, that’s it! :stuck_out_tongue:

OOooh, Sleddope! Yay sledding! But first, we have to go see all the pretty fall colors. Hmmm…Traverse City is nice.

Finally! I’m in my glory as soon as autumn hits, and none of my friends understand. They are all sun/heat worshippers, and summer is hell for me. Bugs, heat, the baking sun roasting my pasy-white skin…where’s the appeal?

Ahh, but fall…crisp, frosty mornings, soft snuggly sweaters, and I sleep like a baby under my big quilt with the windows wide open. I love this stuff. We haven’t had any snow that stayed yet, but hopefully soon. Ain’t it grand?

Wow - this thread has smoked out 2 more dopers from Michigan that I never knew about! Hiya, Velma!

I prefer summer, but I have found a few things to like about winter:

Firing up a blaze in our new woodstove. It toasts up the whole house, and I love being able to instantly warm my whole body while standing over it. Some nights we sit on the floor in the dining room and just stare into the flames for hours.

The cozy sound of the furnace kicking in – on a cold blustery day it gives such a feeling of security, especially if I’m tucked under a blanket.

Watching the dogs go galumphing through the snow, scooping it in their mouths as they go. Then watching the steam rise off them as they come into the house.

Working at home in my bathrobe and socks, tucked into my warm office with the heater on.
