Despite feeling cold all week, I really enjoy the cooler and cold weather - I’m far enough south that harsh winters don’t really happen (But this is my first winter in this down, so who knows how it will be).
My favorite thing about the weather getting cooler? The soups and stews you can make that warm you up inside - yesterday I made a black bean soup that burundi had posted in a thread somewhere (I don’t have the link, sorry), and it was just fantastic. The warm soup and the cool air.
Having my bedroom nice and cool without having to run the A/C. Last night I switched from a t-shirt to flannel pajamas and closed the window nearest my head, because I was too cool, even with the down comforter. But I slept so well.
Soup! How could I forget about soup?? I got a new 16-quart stockpot with a set of cookware this summer, and I have serious plans for that bad boy. A perfect mate for our lovely white ceramic tureen.
“Beautiful Soup, so rich and green,
Waiting in a hot tureen!
Who for such dainties would not stoop?
Soup of the evening, beautiful soup!
Soup of the evening, beautiful soup!
Beau–ootiful Soo–oop!
Beau–ootiful Soo–oop!
Soo–oop of the e-e-evening,
Beautiful, beautiful Soup!”
Ok, ok, ok, I changed it. Sheesh, you guys are all detail oriented. I grew up in da UP. I moved to Colorado in the fall of 1991. I moved back to da UP in July of 2002. Got it?
God I miss Chicago in the fall! I lived in TX for 10 months and the whole summer I was trapped inside with cabin fever! In winter it rains, that’s it. It was AWEFUL!!! How can anyone have Christmas with green lawns and rain? Colorado isn’t so bad, but it’s not home 9. When fall hits all I can think about is what a great day it’d be for a horse-back ride!
Don’t knock green lawns and rain too much–it beats what we get in the summer.
I’ve actually left the A/C shut off for days, and my apartment has remained comfortably cool. I may not have snow, but at least I’m not melting anymore. I’m still waiting impatiently for the first frost, though.
Winter rocks. There comes a point in the summer time when there’s nothing you can do but sweat and be miserable. In the winter, you can always put more layers on and stay warm.
Besides, you can’t wear a kilt in Texas in the summertime. You just can’t.
Wednesday it flurried here (MN).
LilMiss and I stood outside for about 20 minutes catching the first snowflakes on my tongue. Wispy flakes landing on our eyelashes, veiling everything in white lace. Tickling as it went down our necks. A huge snowflake landing on the tip LilMiss’s nose, causing her to cross eyes and smile.
raises hand I’m in K’zoo and grew up in the UP. I have fond memories as a child of the monthly winter ritual of shovelling out the mailbox so the mailman will deliver to us.
If you really want to be scared, go to a local library (probably in the UP) and dig up archive photos of that really bad blizzard they had back in the 20’s–I’ve seen pictures of people skiing OVER telephone lines. (And no, they were NOT downed…)
Knoxville’s not bad in the winter. It snows sometimes, but not much. Usually.
I’m so glad it’s gotten colder now. Football games are no fun when you’re sitting outside in 70-degree weather at 9 PM. Not the same. My hands may freeze off, but at least I’m not sweltering!
I don’t mind winter. I bitch about it a whole lot though. I don’t mind the cold (I live in flannel pj pants and sweatshirts), and snow is really pretty. What I don’t like is the fact that people seem to forget how to drive as soon as snow falls. I see more accidents and ditch-bound vehicles after the first significant snowfall than at any other time during the season. I am terrified of driving during the winter season. I do, because I have to, but I don’t like it.
I’ve seen pictures of that snowstorm. Not people skiing over the telephone lines, but a picture of the tippy top of a line of telephone poles, with snow up to the first crossbar. I’ll have to see if I can dig that picture up somewhere and post it.
I’ll also make sure to take pics when the big snow comes and post 'em. I remember having the snow completely cover the sliding glass doors that led to our deck when I was a kid - you couldn’t see even an inch of daylight through 'em. Big snow rocks. I’m gonna build a snowfort for my dog to play in. I’m gonna build snowmen. I’m gonna go see the sled dog race when it comes through town. I’m gonna ski and snowshoe.
Well, I’m not from Michigan, but we’ve been having a glorious fall so far in western Montana. Blue skies, highs in the low 60’s, lows in the high 20’s, frost on the grass in the morning. It’s beautiful.
Plus, winter’s only a month (or so) away! Skiing! Yay!
