Hooray! The cold weather appreciation thread

I live in the north. Winter has been here for, oh, I dunno… 2 weeks AT LEAST. It was -27 today. Theres a foot of snow outside.
I, for one, do NOT appreciate Cold. the only thing Its good for is snowmobiling… and hardly that, because Its usually to cold to go out snowmobileing. Last year I think our record low was -64 WITHOUT the windchill.

I like cold, down to about -15C. I love autumn. Hot chocolate and tea and buttered toast, and getting to wear my trenchcoat and sweaters and my very cool new hat and cloak and not broiling in my featherbed…

Yay, cold!

Also, I can bake bread and make stew and soup without feeling silly. And eat bacon, because it’s important to put on a nice layer of insulation for winter.

Mmm. Nice cool weather… I can have my window open, and fan on… I can sleep under my nice soft flannel sheets, sheepskin blanket, and quilt without sweating and being allllllll nice and cozy…

Now, if only my mouse, instead of vibrating (iFeel) had a heater instead.

Sweater weather!

I don’t mind cold or snow that much as long as I don’t have to actually be IN it. I know some disagree, but I really don’t care. In my younger years I had to climb 30 feet up a 60 foot silo to shovel down feed in -38F weather because the silo unloader quit. The same day I got to sit in an unheated tractor waiting for an external heater to warm up the diesel above gel stage. The same day they cancelled school.

I would rather have been in school. They have heat there.

I also really hate scraping snow off my windshield.

If anyone has that copy of the forwarded story which begins “YAY!! I moved to the bucolic U.P. country side. Wifey and I are drinking red wine next to the fire while watching the snow drift down. Such a peaceful night…” and ends “%%&%(& snowplow driver knocked over our mailbox aGAIN!! And our septic froze over for the FIFTH time this season…don’t eat the brown snow.”, please send it to me.

Other than that, though, I really do like winter.

It’s great to be able to walk places without getting all sweaty.

I wish I could be sure that all our snowstorms this winter would be all snow, instead of (as almost always happens) beginning as snow, then changing to sleet and rain. It isn’t fun anymore to see snow in the forecast; you know the storm’s probably going to poop out no matter how enthusiastic the forecast is. :frowning:

Thanks OPAL!!

Here in CT it’s getting nice and chilly. Mrs.Phlosphr and I actually had a Fire last night!!

And the maples in our front yard are all firey red, yellw and orange!!

I’m glad to see others like myself. Frankly I can’t wrap my brain around the idea of liking the heat or the sun. I’ve tried to understand, but I just don’t get it. When it’s sunny, I close all the curtains and hide.

I used to hate summer and live for fall and winter, but now I can appreciate all four seasons.

Cold weather is much better for running, though. Ran a five-mile race this morning in 40 degree weather and blew away my former personal best time. Well, maybe “blew away” is a bit of an exaggeration. Ran it at least 3 minutes faster than last time.

I love winter! Except windy days. That ruins it.

I remember fondly that 1996 winter when we got down to -60* one Thursday  Outside for 60 seconds and any unprotected skin got frostbite. Ah, memories.

I guess you mean you like a typically Centreville, VA type of cold winter.

Try a winter in Minot, ND or Duluth, MN or Cut Bank, MT.

MMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMM winter! And autumn as well!

Winter is the best season ever, with autumn a very close second. Spring is a distant third, and summer is the demon spawn that no one likes but keeps butting into the picture regularly.

I love wearing flannel and fleece at night. I love wearing my black coat and hat and gloves, feeling stylish because they match just right with my granny boots for an awesome look. I love driving with no heat on, warm in my coat but chilly on my face.

I love the icy cold winds. I love the fact that after it drops below 20F, I’m not cold anymore (I used to do full-serves [when I worked at a gas station] with my button down shirt and flannel shirt over it when it was about 5F outside, and not freezing at all). I love snow, I love grey skies.

I think I have reverse seasonal affective disorder. I’m much more likely to be depressed and over all “blah” in the summer and spring, and much more likely to be in a good mood/cheerful/etc in the winter and autumn.

I love cold weather too. Too bad we never get it here. Last time it snowed was in the 1970s.

Two days ago it was 65F when I left the house in the morning, the coldest it’s been since maybe April. I swear I saw two people wearing heavy, padded jackets. I hate to think what will become of them when the temperature first drops below 50.

(Wish me luck… I’m visiting St. Louis this November and Chicago this February and I just might see snow for the first time.)

I can’t stand hot weather, which is in abundance here in Oklahoma. I am from upstate New York, where I have lived just long enough to know the difference between nice, cold weather that I am comfortable in and the usual humid, warm junk.

We actually felt the seasons change a little earlier this year, and to me and my family, it is most welcome. We are rather cold-blooded, so to speak. It was a mild summer, so perhaps we are in for a good winter this year, in contrast to the usual brown Christmas.

I have no idea what a typical Centreville winter is. I haven’t lived in Northern Virginia very long, and the last few have apparently been atypical anyway.

I’m not saying that it cannot possibly get too cold for me. Typically I don’t like anything below 15 degrees (F) if I have to be outside much more than just walking from the car to wherever… unless I’m wearing piles of ski clothing and hurtling down the side of a mountain. I wouldn’t want to live in Antarctica, for example, and I’m sure there are plenty of places with harsh winters where I would get frustrated if I had to leave the house very often. I’m fortunate, however, in that I work from home. This means I have the luxury of being able to appreciate more intense winters

For comparison: I love the winters in Connecticut, but they don’t have enough snow. I love the winters in the Colorado mountains above Denver. Most people don’t live in climate extremes, and yet most people seem to say they hate winter, hate the cold, hate the rain, hate the snow… it is sad to me and completely incomprehensible.

First off, I adore grey skies. They are far more beautiful (in my opinion) than blue skies, and no, I don’t get sick of them nor would I ever. If you don’t believe me, look at all the people from my hometown, (Tucson, AZ,) where the average is 360 sunny days per year, who still say it’s a beautiful day when they step outside every morning. If they don’t get sick of blue, then it’s fair to say that I really mean it when I say I don’t get sick of grey.

I feel the same way regarding the RSAD (woohoo I invented an acronym!).

Oh, no, believe me, I’m not saying that summer in TX is better. It’s just that I grew up outside of Chicago and 50 degrees and unending rain was really depressing when I look forward to crisp cold air, the kind that turns your nose and cheeks red, and snow. It was like I was cheated out of winter that year.

As for summerin TX, the only time I left my house was to go to work and to come home. Occasionally we ran out of food and I was forced to go to the grocery store. We ran the AC from late April to the begining of October when we moved back to CO.

In Tucson, we often ran the cooler or AC year round  Running the car AC was year round, too.
