How Do You Pronounce Finnish Hero Leminkainen et. al. ?

And Vainamoinen too, and Tuonetar. In entries on these characters they never tell you how to pronounce them.
Is it Le min ka EE nen or Le min kI nen, etc.?
I as in eye. Too O ne tar? or TWOH ne tar.

From seeing a movie on MST3K, I go with LE-min-KINE-en, vine-uh-MOYN-en, and (although I don’t recall him being in the movie, TWONE-eh-tar.

You might want to put out a call to flodnak, though.

Would somebody please close that parenthesis for me?

All words in Finnish are accented on the first syllable, and
all letters are pronounced.

Lemminkainen (there are two “m”'s, not one, and there’s an
umlaut over the “a” that I can’t insert) is pronounced

LEM-min-keyen-en. (The “ai” diphthong in the third syllable
isn’t quite like the English long “I”; try sounding the “a”
in “cat” and the “i” in “elite” together.)

Vainamoinen (there should be umlauts over the a’s and o)
is pronounced, approximately, VEYE-na-meuhi-nen. (The
o-umlaut sound is pronounced like the same letter in
German; it just doesn’t occur in English.)

TWON-eh-tar isn’t too far off, although there should be a
little bit of long “u” before the o (try pronouncing a long
u, then a long o–it works).

Nakemiin!
