How do you pronounce "Powhite" VA names?

There are several place names in Virginia with the word “Powhite” in them. How does one pronounce this?

Po’ white?
Pau ight?
Po’ ight? (like po’ white, but with less of an audible ‘w’)

Inquiring minds want to avoid embarassment should this word ever occur!

POW-hite.

Think POW_hatten.

It’s an Indian name, so the “white” is just a coincidence.

I always say Po’ White, because the Powhite parkway used to go to the poor white section of Richmond and I’m still waiting for someone to laugh at my joke.

The correct way, so far as my English roots allow, is “Pow Hite.”

Yeah, but the word is not used in powite company.

We always say “Poe-white” but I doubt that’s correct. We also say “Yankee” for Jahnnke, but that might actually be correct. . .
