How do you read the Dope?

Getting on the Dope each day is actually exciting for me- what a boredom killer! I go from top to bottom: GQ, GD, CS, IMHO, MPSIMS, Pit, and if I run out of interesting stuff to check out, then I peruse the Comments.

And when there’s a juicy GD or Pit with lots of linkies, then sometimes I get wrapped up in the history of a debate/conflict, which takes me all over the place. Those are the best!

I go up from the bottom,

Pit
MPSIMS
IMHO
CS
(Generally avoid GD unless a thread title in the ‘new posts’ box catches my eye)
GQ
Don’t go into either of the comments forums
ABTM if there’s anything new/interesting in there.

I forgot - how I actually start is by opening my buddy list and seeing if my Mom posted anything. She doesn’t often though, probably because she has a life.

Pit first, then MPSIMS, then IMHO, then Cafe Society, then GQ. I don’t hardly ever read in GD - those guys are way too smart for me. I’ll check out ATMB if someone has been banned just so I can maybe find out why, but that’s about it.

  1. User CP, to see if there’s any response to any of my rubbish.

  2. A quick glance through GQ, to see if there are any questions I’ve a particular interest in or (very rarely) knowledge of. If I do have anything to contribute, it’s usually already been answered better than I could. But there are sometimes good questions there, and I like having my ignorance fought.

  3. MPSIMS. I love anecdotes and personal stuff and cat photos and all that, although I didn’t bother when I first started reading the SDMB.

  4. IMHO, for fairly similar reasons.

  5. CS, but that’s usually a quick visit unless there’s a good musicians’ thread or something, or if the thread is about a movie or TV series I know and like (which is rare).

  6. GD, just in case there’s something of interest.

Usually, though, by the time I’ve finished the second page of MPSIMS, the server’s forgotten what’s unread, and it gets to be a pain trying to find new threads and new posts. So I tend to give up at that point unless I’m desperately bored. Tired hamsters aside, that’s my biggest gripe about the Board.

What is it, an hour before things are automatically marked read?

Step 1. Click GQ. Open a browser tab for anything interesting on page 1. That’s usually ~30 threads. Go through the tabs reading & occasionally commenting. Close each tab as I finish it.

Step 2. Repeat Step 1 in IMHO. Usually find ~20 to read.

Step 3. Repeat step 1 in MSIMS Usually find ~15 to read.
Repeat all above tomorrow.

Start with vanity search to see updates to threads I have started or posted in.

Then Cafe Society.
Then IMHO.
Then MPSIMS.
Then The Pit.
Then GQ.
Then GD.

with stops along the way to refresh the vanity search.

I open threads that sound interesting but usually only if they are two pages or less, unless it’s a very interesting topic or a classic in the making (punny, rife with funny posts). After three pages I would only be adding “me too” to something.

For me, when I first get here, it’s either BBQ Pit or CS, depending on my mood, or if there is something of interest as the listed thread. After that, I go through IMHO if there’s time, then MPSIMS, and then, for the other five forums, I only usually enter if I know there’s something of interest ‘on the go’, or if there’s something of interest on the homepage.

I do something like this, but a little bit longer way around.

I’m usually at work or in class when reading on here, so I have a ton of time and just kind of sit around. Instead of going thread-by-thread, I open each forum I find interesting in a new tab - basically that is The Pit, GQ, MPSIMS, and IMHO. Then when I’m done I open Cafe Society, read it, and start over - or I do that in a similar order but use IMHO last…

I read this board way too much. By the end of my shift, I’m staring at it going “Post, c’mon, c’mon, just post something!” - well, not really, but I often find myself stuck reading the same posts over again by the end of the night to wait for something new to come up…

I go to User Control, & check my threads.
If off-peak, I open tabs for each thread, & go through them quicker that way.
On-peak hours, I avoid this.

Then, New Posts.

I never go Forum by Forum.
