I was wondering last night about why I always sleep the way I do, and so here’s a question for you all…
When you fall asleep what position are you in?
On your back?
front?
side?
Stretched out like a starfish, or curled into a foetal ball?
Rolled up against the wall, or almost on the edge and falling out?
Under the blankets, on the blankets, or tangled up in the blankets?
Do you sleep differently when you share a bed?
Do you sleep back to back/face to face/side by side/spoon?
If you spoon, who goes in front and who goes behind?
Does one of you fall asleep on the other?
Does the size of the bed make a difference?
Do you wake up the same way you fell asleep?
I always sleep on my back with my arms by my side, and wake up on my front with my arms over my head, usually jammed up beside the wall.
When I sleep with irishfella we sleep spooning or back to back, and because he wakes first and rolls me into his arms, I wake up with my head on his chest and his big blue eyes looking into mine…scared the hell out of me the first few times!
Since I currently have a broken arm and at least 30 or 40 broken ribs, I sleep on my back, propped up, with a pillow over me to keep the cats from using me as a launching pad. I also sleep 30 minutes or so at a time, till I wake up and see if it’s time for more painkillers yet . . . It has not been a good month.
In my healthier days, I sleep buried under a pile of pillows and quilts in a great big bed. I love sleep. Sleep is my favorite hobby. “Sleep is death without the responsibility.”—Fran Lebowitz.
I lie on my back with 3 pillows piled up to make a wedge - I need to sleep with my head and chest slightly elevated. I may roll to one side or the other for a bit, but I always end up on my back. (That sounds dirty… )
When I go to see my husband or he comes home, we may spoon for a while, but if I want to breathe freely thru the night, I’m back on my wedge. These days, I’d just like to sleep, regardless of position. Waking up several times a night is getting old…
For some reason, I always fall asleep on my left side, and I could wake up any way imaginable. I like the room to be cold, and a nice thick comforter on me.
Spooning is a distant, lovely memory, and something I can’t see happening anytime soon. But that’s another thread entirely.
I don’t enjoy going to bed any more. My wife is currently in another state and I’m terribly bored all night after work, so I have lost of energy even when I’m tired and alone in the big bed (I’ve recently started letting the dog sleep next to me to have a warm body close by).
I try all sorts of positions for a good half-our to fourty-five minutes before I conk out, and I never remember what position I’m in by then.
I find I sleep best after several beers and a long night just so I can collapse in bed and not worry about it.
Which makes it rough during the week, as I only drink on the weekends any more.
With visions of Eve in my head. Which now, thanks to her reference to 30-40 busted ribs, involve an erotic element of her wrapped around me constrictor-like.
I’ll see your teething baby and raise you a four year old who likes to crawl in bed with Mommy and Daddy and have coughing fits while wiggling around so much that she has most of a two meter wide bed to herself.
On the floor of the back room at work during lunch time. Nothing like a heated floor to make a nap nice and comfy.
I have trouble falling asleep lying on my back, but I usually wake up that way. I usually end up either on my side or my front, depending on how sore I am (and what’s sore) from my last workout (if my arms hurt, I can’t sleep with my arms over my head).
I recall that several years ago someone posted a thread about “the good things in life.” My contribution was “a good night’s sleep.” Very little in this life beats crawling into bed, on crisp clean sheets, fresh from the shower, with the window open and clear, cool air filtering into the room, and laying your head on the pil…snnnnnnzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkk…Hmm…what/ oh, sorry.
Fortunately, I’m one of those that can fall asleep in about 2 minutes at anytime of the day or night, no matter the noise level, position, or environment (I don’t like to have my feet covered up, though). My SO, who has a terrible time getting to and staying asleep, gives me grief about it.
As to how I usually start out:
On my left side, with two pillows. Sleeping on your stomach puts strain on your lower back, and given my discs that’s a no-no.
In addition to not liking to have my feet covered up, I don’t like to sleep facing my SO. I don’t want to breathe in her face, and I don’t want her to breathe in mine (which, in retrospect, is stupid, since we’ve each put our mouths all over every inch of each other’s bodies at one time or another). I guess it is similar to dog’s enjoying having their head out a car window, but hating it when you blow in their faces.
Spooning position - me to her back. The better to facilitate nocturnal forays into…well, you get the picture.
I start out on my stomach, head to the right (outside of the bed), right leg pulled up next to me, and one ear always open for nighttime calls of “Daddy, Daddy, Daddy.”
While I don’t sleepwalk or sleeptalk, I do apparently sleepgrope. This amuses Mrs. Gaffer to no end, especially when I wake her up, get her motor started and then roll back over to resume “sleeping.”
I only sleep on my side. I really want to be able to sleep spooning Mrs. Giraffe, but I can’t fall asleep with my arm pinned, so we just spoon right before falling asleep and right after waking up.
I live alone and therefore sleep alone. I am usually on my right side when I fall asleep. By the time I wake up I’m either still on my right side or on my back. I can never sleep on my left side, and I’ve never tried sleeping on my stomach (it would make breathing more difficult for me). My body is usually more stretched out than curled up. I prefer the right side of the bed (right as seen from the sleeper’s point of view). Unless it’s hot and muggy I usually have the covers on me upon awakening.

I usually sleep on my left side, but I squirm around a lot. I sleep alone, but it takes forever to get to sleep because of my racing mind (I wish it came with an “off” switch…). I can sleep on a small mattress, but I like double beds best. I have trouble with waterbeds since I’m not used to them and they’re hard to maneuver, but I’ve only had to sleep on one once or twice. I can’t deal with bunk beds at all. How I wake up varies - sometimes I wake up in the fetal position cuddling my blanket, sometimes I’m sprawled and tangled in the sheets… once I even woke up in the guest room, curled around the large mirror lying on the bed! I’m picky about sleeping - I have to be perfectly comfy, the right temperature, lights completely out, no noise at all (except maybe ambient, calm, new agey music), etc. I have trouble falling asleep when another person is in the same bed (or room for that matter). Yep, that’s me.
When I’m alone I fall asleep on either my left or right side curled up in a little ball under a thick comforter squeezing the heck out of my teddy bear. I usually wake up in the same position only on the opposite side. (Fall asleep on my right side, wake up on my left.)
When I’m not sleeping on my own then there is much spooning involved. Us laying on our left sides with me in front and I’m using his left arm for a pillow.
I’m a fussy sleeper. To fall asleep, I need to lay on my side; my head needs to be on a pillow exactly the height required to keep my neck and spine aligned, and I like to be as symetrical as possible. I like the room cool, and both a comforter and a quilt on me so that it feels heavy. I typically spoon my husband, but it drives me bonkers to have him hold me. It also takes me a long time to fall asleep, and I sleep fitfully. I kick around, throw my arms any which way, and steal pillows and blankets. I usually wake up sideways across the bed, after my husband goes to work. Also - I rarely talk during the day, so I evidentally use nights to stretch my vocal chords. I yell out at some point in the night more often than I don’t. I’m sure my husband just adores this trait of mine. I guess this morning I woke him up by screaming “Call 911, call 911, Help help help”, so he woke me, but I had been dreaming about working in the garden. I wonder what my emergency was.
It is impossible for me to sleep on my back. Have never been able to do it.
First off, I need two pillows. I take one, fold it in half and put it under my head. I can lie on either my right or left side. Then I take the arm under me and crook it under the pillow under my head, cradling the pillow, and then cradling my head. I take the other pillow and squeeze it in my free arm. My legs are spread and bent at the knees, making a little nook for my cat to curl up in and keep my crotch warm.
I usually have to switch back and forth from my left to my right before I begin to nod off. I also have to have music playing.
