How do you turn a hero into a villan? (Star Wars related) Spoilers?

Some one asked one of the better non-important questions that has me stumped.

So, I throw it to the sci fi lovin’ dopers (who know more about this than I ever will. - and I haven’t seen Star Wars 2, attack of the clones - )

How will George Lucas make Anakin Skywalker (who is a hero in Star Wars 1) and I am assuming a hero in SW2, turn to the dark side?

This is a character that little kids are playing with and emulating. How do you turn him into such a vile, contemptuous creature and make the fan base not want to follow in the Dark Lords footsteps?

I think I said that right…at least in my mind it is…

Easy

I don’t see what the problem is. Darth Vader and Boba Fett were models for emulation long ago, and nobody ever worried about people following in their footsteps.

Well as you haven’t seen SW2, you miss out on what happens to work on changing him.
Basically he is training to be a jedi as seen in the first movie. Jedi’s aren’t supposed to feel love, or hate but he is falling in love with Amidala and she in return.

Now basically in the movie you see him as generally a normal young man. Falling in love with Amidala, and missing his mom. He is assigned to Amidala as a bodyguard so they spend lots of time together. Eventually for some reason they go back to Tatooine (sp?) and find that his Mom was bought by a man… Uncle Owen’s father… who released her and married her. She was kidnapped by those sand guys and Anakin goes after her. He finds her on the verge of death and she dies in his arms her last sight being of him.

He gets extremely pissed off… gives into rage and kills all the guys who were there who had anything to do with his Mom. He goes back to the farm and picks up Amidala and gives this whole speech about he should be powerful enough to stop death etc etc…

Basicaly you find he is a young man torn between his duty as a Jedi and the feelings raging through him. Anger over his mother’s death and the love he feels for Amidala. He is starting to turn to the dark side but he seems more… sympathetic right now. Like you can understand why he is doing stuff.
Sorry if I muddled things up. Thinking fast and haven’t watched the movie in a bit, though my roomie was watching it earlier today.

Hey, thanks, you ruined nothing. The person who asked that question to me hadn’t seen SW2 yet either. I appreciate the condensed version.

Thanks.
