How Do You Want Your Grilled Cheese Sandwich?

No, you’re not. I never even heard of grilled cheese and tomato soup being a “thing” until I was well into my 30s. And I love tomato soup. And the idea of dipping the sandwich in soup is really off-putting. Simultaneously ruins a good sandwich and a good soup.

I don’t like tomato soup anyway, and find the idea of deliberately ruining my sandwich by getting the bread all soggy and icky a bit queasy-making (I can’t deal with soggy bread/pastry).

Rye bread with american cheese.

Or, for a good contrast, make it with a really strong rye and cream cheese. It’s a sweet/salty thing that works for me.

I wonder if “grilled cheese + tomato soup” came from the same place as “chili + cinnamon roll”? Maybe standardized (?) school lunch menus?

OK, without wading into the “added stuff? Not a grilled cheese!” debate, I just polished off a delicious, ummm, grilled sandwich with cheese and other stuff:

White bread,
butter
ever-so-thinly sliced Gruyere,
ever-so thinly-sliced leftover ham
ever-so thinly-sliced apple
just a wee bit more ever-so thinly-sliced Gruyere

Grilled up in a big ol’ cast iron pan. And it was awesome!

American cheese, wonder bread, butter. Fry until golden brown. Any other combination of cheese and bread is equally good as well. (Except blue cheese… Terrible idea.)

I don’t understand this making of tomato soup with milk, though… Sounds disgusting. Condensed tomato soup made with water is the only way to go. Add pepper, though.

Sounds like you’ve never tried it. Once you have, tomato soup made with water not only sounds, but tastes disgusting.
