What specifically happens to autoclave tape to make it change color when it’s autoclaved?
WAG: it reacts with water at high temperatures to change some compound in the tape?
The “compound” in the tape is a color-changing ink (usually). It gets hot and “scorches”.
I first pulled autoclave tape off of a sterile exam kit in 1976. What always amazed me was that it appeared to be masking tape with two diferent inkings, one as mentioned already turned colors when scorched.
How did the tape not decompose? How did the adhesive layer not turn ooogey and leave reside everywhere? That stuff was tres cool.
