How does one become a 'film director'?

Also, we’ve got people like this local politician, lawyer, and, uh, filmmaker, Bubba Cromer. He’s, one supposes, rich, and has a lot of powerful friends, who I guess he must have gotten to invest in his movie, which he wrote, directed, and produced, about Bigfoot. He won Best Narrative Feature with it at the New York International Independent Film and Video Festival. He’s making his second movie now and my boyfriend has been, shall we say, “tapped” to direct part of it. (You should have heard that phone call. My god, was it bizarre and hilarious.) I found out yesterday that I’ve been asked to act in it. (No, I can’t act, why do you ask? Bubba says that doesn’t matter.) John Waters called Mr. Cromer and just said “Shock me!”

So that’s another way to become a director - get rich and powerful some other way and then make your own movies. I have not seen the Bigfoot movie (it’s called The Long Way Home) but people say it’s actually a lot of fun. I believe it cost somewhere between $15,000 and $20,000 to make, but people named things like Bubba Cromer have a lot of friends to call on. I believe it’s at least made the money back.

A quote about Mr. Cromer I found while Googling to find out the name of the movie: ““This creative animal has been trapped in a lawyer/legislator body all these years,” Mr. Maddox said. “And now that it’s out, I’m sort of concerned for humanity.””
