I have a long sofa that is about 2.5 years old. It has a butt dent where my fianceee and I typically sit. The seat cushion is a long piece of 4"-6" thick foam covered by batting and the upholstery. The cushion is supported trampoline-style by what appears to be some cotton cloth that is stitched to the upholstery fabric covering the sofa base, and stretched tautly across the sofa base. Not sure if there are any other supports.
I guess I should try reversing the sofa cushion - it would make a difference in our case as the dent is near one of the ends. Failing that, though, what are the best practices for getting the sofa back to a springy, new state? Is it possible the dent is in the fabric “trampoline” supporting the cushion? What do I do if that’s the case?
Put the cushion on the floor and see if the dent is just in the cushion. If it is, it’s most likely a cheap foam problem. In that case I would go to an upholstery shop and have a new piece of higher quality foam cut and put in the cushion cover.
The fabric trampoline should have some zig zaggy springs underneath it. If there is a problem with the springs someone might be able to fix them from underneath (if you take the fabric off the bottom you can see them). It’s a fairly new couch so if it is a spring problem it might be covered under a warranty. Foam problems aren’t usually.
