The biggest difference is that Back In The Day, they were pushing Extended Validation (EV) certificates. You may remember them as Green Bar certificates. These certified that the company presenting the certificate was who they said they were. Less stringent were Organizational Validation (OV) and finally Domain Validation (DV) certificates. They are all the same when it comes to encryption between server and user.
The vast majority of certificates out there are DV only.
