How does your favorite Gang of Four map? (i.e., Star Trek, Seinfeld, The Beatles...)

The Who:

  1. Pete Townshend
  2. Roger Daltrey
  3. John Entwistle
  4. Keith Moon
  1. Hero, conflicted - typically the true protagonist of the situation/story
  2. Hero, not conflicted - typically more of a pure “hero ideal”
  3. Contrarian or emotionally more complex
  4. Comedy relief

Friends:
1)Chandler
2) Monica
3)Ross/Rachel
4) Joey/Phoebe

Criminal Minds:

  1. Jason Gideon
  2. Aaron Hotchner/Elle
  3. Spencer Reid
  4. Penelope Garcia

This is very wrong. In no possible way is Frodo an unconflicted hero.

I might need some help with The Young Ones

  1. Mike - conflicted…as he’s “The Cool Guy”
  2. Vyvyan - unconflicted
  3. Neil - Actually has emotions
  4. Rik - WISHES he was emotionally complex but really just there to get his balls knocked about

1.) Mal
2.) Zoe
3.) Jayne
4.) Wash

Let’s give the Fantastic Four a spin:

  1. Hero conflicted: Ben Grimm
  2. Hero unconflicted: Reed Richards
  3. Emotionally more complex: Susan Storm Richards
  4. Comedy relief: Johnny Storm
  1. Forman
    2.) Hyde
    3.) Donna
    4.) Kelso/Fez

Oops, you’re right. It should go like this:

  1. Frodo (and Boromir, while he’s around)
  2. Samwise
  3. Aragorn, Legolas, Elrond, Gandalf, buncha others
  4. Merry and Pippin
    “D” is for lysdexia! :stuck_out_tongue:

Well, the Beatles obviously had no female members. And hell, when did we start to apply fiction theory to real-life people?

But I feel, with the examples of Star Wars and Futurama, that it would be likely that any female lead is stocked into category number two. Especially regarding families.

Will & Grace:
Grace Adler
Will Truman
Jack McFarland
Karen Walker

King of Queens:
Doug
Carrie
Holly
Arthur

How about Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles?

  1. Leonardo
  2. Donatello
  3. Raphael
  4. Michelangelo
  1. Jubal Harshaw / Gillian Boardman
  2. Valentine Michael Smith
  3. Ben Caxton
  4. Bishop Digby
  5. Paul Atreides
  6. Duncam Idaho / Stilgar
  7. Jessica
  8. Baron Harkonnen
  9. Louis Wu
  10. Speaker to Animals / Teela Brown
  11. The Ringworld itself / Teela Brown / Nessus / Speaker to Animals
  12. Nessus / various minor characters
It’s a little bit harder to do with the classic sci-fi epics!

I would offer:

  1. Eric & Donna (more complex)
  2. Kelso & Jackie (less complex, more “ideal”)
  3. Hyde/Red
  4. Fez

I’m trying this for Sluggy Freelance, but it doesn’t seem to quite work. Torg is more of a hybrid #1/#4. Anyway:

  1. Torg and Riff
  2. Bun-Bun*
  3. Zoe
  4. Torg and Kiki
  • I realize that Bun-Bun is hardly the idealised version of a hero, but he’s certainly never conflicted, and other than in the storylines driven by Bun-Bun, he does end up fighting for the right side, if for the wrong reasons(well, ostensibly for the wrong reasons, anyway).
  1. Mal
  2. Mal
  3. Mal
  4. Mal

Yeah, I still miss Firefly

  1. John
  2. Garfield
  3. ???
  4. Odie

Actually, Firefly does seem to follow this pattern, in two layers:

  1. Mal and River
  2. Zoey and Simon
  3. Inara and Kaylee
  4. Wash and Jayne
    and
  5. Shepherd = ??? (He is shrouded in mystery, obviously powerful or important, knows a lot about shady dealings, crime and security and wears a disguise that places him outside of all suspicion. His name is two symbols (Shepherd Book), which is almost as obvious as naming your sons Cain and Able. Too bad he just got greased in the movie, I would have liked to know who the hell he is.)
  1. Hero, conflicted - typically the true protagonist of the situation/story
  2. Hero, not conflicted - typically more of a pure “hero ideal”
  3. Contrarian or emotionally more complex
  4. Comedy relief

U2:

  1. Bono
  2. The Edge
  3. Larry Mullen
  4. Adam Clayton

That checks out quite well. Let’s try some others!

Pink Floyd:

  1. Syd Barret / Roger Waters
  2. Rick Wright
  3. David Gilmour
  4. Nick Mason

The West Wing:

  1. Leo / Bartlet
  2. Charlie!
  3. Everybody
  4. C.J.

The Office (American version):

  1. Michael
  2. Pam
  3. Jim
  4. Dwight

Dilbert:

  1. Dilbert
  2. Alice
  3. Wally
  4. Dogbert

My life:

  1. Me
  2. ???
  3. Me
  4. Me

The model fits less and less as I continue, so I’ll stop here.
