My subdivision has a facebook page. I was recently called out on it for having the audacity to mow my grass at 8:45 on a Saturday morning. I admit I am an early riser, but I feel anything after 8 is a fine time to mow before the heat of the day made being outside unpleasant. My neighbor insists the acceptable hours are 10AM to 8PM for making noise in a residential neighborhood on the weekend. But around here it is already 90 degrees by 10:00 during the summer.
So my fellow dopers, what time on a Saturday would you consider acceptable to make loud noise outside in a residential setting?
In my neighborhood, mowing lawns starts at 8AM. As a practical matter, that’s when the lawn mowing services start showing up to mow the lawns they’re paid to mow (yes, even on Saturday), so you might as well mow your own lawn at the same time.
I think after 8 is cool. Mow away, my friend. I mean, if all I’ve got to bitch about is a neighbor mowing early in the morning, it’s gonna be a good day!
But, thinking of others and not just myself… I think 10 am is a reasonable expectation. I probably wouldn’t start making noise until -at least- 09:30.
I mow after 8 on weekends. But our neighborhood is all 3-acre lots, so the houses are spread out. Plus I think everyone uses a/c, and you really can’t hear a mower with all the windows closed.
What about night-workers? I’m pretty sure they don’t want their daytime sleep interrupted by mowers and blowers and week-whackers. That’s life, folks. You can learn to live in an imperfect world or you can bitch about everything…
I wouldn’t complain about 9AM or after even though I’m hoping to still be asleep at that time. There are some local ordinances, I think the next town over sets the time at 8AM.
So if somebody is bitching about the world of other people not conforming to his preferences, that’s a good time to point out that maybe he isn’t meeting everyone else’s needs, either.
As a 2nd shift worker, I usually sleep from 4ish am until like 1ish pm during the week. If I have to put up with god damn leave blowers and lawn mowers on my day off at 8:45am, then you need to be prepared to deal with heavy metal blasting at 2am.
These are our local guidelines: Garden maintenance including lawnmowers and garden equipment. Maintenance or repair work including the use of power tools.
7:00 am - 8:00 pm Monday to Saturday.
8:00 am - 8:00 pm Sunday and public holidays.
Unless the temperature is going to be really bad I usually wait until 9am on a weekend. None of our neighbours are shift-workers so 8am on a weekday would be fine.
Don’t know if there’s any rules here, but I would not be bothered by anything later than, say, 7:30 am. Mind you, I’m usually sleeping at that time, but it wouldn’t even occur to me that it’s too early. 10 am seems crazy late to me as an early boundary.
I would wait until 9 out of courtesy, but wouldn’t raise an eyebrow at anything after 8. Personally, I wait until late evening, but that would be outside your neighbor’s range of acceptable hours too, I often mow at about 8 pm. Sun isn’t as strong, lower humidity, and the grass isn’t wet with dew.
I think 8:00 AM is too early, 8:30 is OK, but I wouldn’t begrudge anyone who wants to mow then. I figure they meant to do the night before when they got home but got busy, so they need to get it done before they take off for the weekend.
I usually wait until 10:00 AM mostly because there’s too much dew on the grass before then.
