How early is too early to mow your lawn?

For what it’s worth, we have a building site at the end of our road. They start up the heavy machinery at 7am six days per week.

Funny, just looked the code for my generally uptight and heavily regulated city. It does not seem to address lawn mowing directly other than in terms of general noise levels. No distinction of weekend, only day vs night, 11 p.m. and 7 a.m. No specific reference to lawnmowers, but building repair/construction is permitted from 7 a.m.-6 p.m. Mon-Sat, and 10 a.m.-6 p.m. Sunday.

If you want to sleep late, and do not wish to ask your neighbors to accommodate your preference, then move somewhere in the boonies where you will have enough distance from your neighbors, or into a well-insulated apartment building where people do not have lawns and gardens.

So kayaker - you’re saying you and your neighbors regularly share brewskis Saturdays at 7 a.m.? Now that’s MY kind of a neighborhood!

 If they are mowing at 7 am, they have big plans for the day. They stop over Sunday or late Saturday with a mix-6.

Not sure which of us started the beer-sorry tradition, but all three households have participated.

The heat index was at 92 when I went to work this morning at 8AM. I expect 102 by the time I drive home with 30-40% humidity. If someone waited til 10am to mow, I’d think they have a screw loose.

But as Kay-T said, NO ONE has their windows open around here from June to September. Personally, I only open my windows late October to mid March.

Maybe I’m just used to it, but the lawn mowing is more like white noise to me anyway. Sort of a comforting background reminder that I don’t have to do it myself.

The ‘heat index’ here is actually 45 Celsius, or 113 F !

Sorry, not buying, “But it’s really hot!” It’s really hot lots of places. People here don’t use it as an excuse to be inconsiderate to their neighbours is all.

I’m just happy in my neighbourhood people are very considerate of each other.

(Also that I don’t live in Texas, where it’s apparently not allowed to open your windows when it’s hot outside!:D)

Around here it’s pretty acceptable to mow as early as 8 am. The only one mowing earlier than that is the City when they mow the park behind my house every single Tuesday morning at 6:30 am all year round. They don’t have to follow their noise laws.

Since a couple of people commented on my shut down by 6 rule. That’s when I’m out enjoying my yard and so are the neighbors. We’re out grilling or sitting on the porch enjoying the evening and I want to listen to music or the birds singing not your lawn mower.

Of course I live someplace that will only break 100 f on rare occasions so most people use open windows to cool their homes. I can see different rules if you’ve got the blinds pulled and the windows closed to shut out the outside world.

When you still occasionally see patches of unmelted snow.

Well, certainly you’re allowed, but why on earth would you do something so ridiculous? I’ll stay down here where my neighbors aren’t bent out by a little lawnmower racket.

But it looks like you’re having heat rage issues, so maybe it’s better to be careful.

I just don’t think it’s seen as inconsiderate here. Then again, I live in a city with a lot of noise, and a part of the city near the airport, so lawnmower noise is automatically tuned out. Also, a good amount of older people who tend to be early risers. You learn to tune this sort of shit out.

When I lived in Baltimore City, I always waited until after the neighbors who kept me up all night with their partying went to bed. Usually around 9am.
Now it’s after 8am during the week, after 9am on Saturday, and after 10am on Sunday.

I Agree. Lawn mower noise is commonplace in the burbs. It’s white noise too us. I never pay it any attention. It’s like the police and fire sirens. I can hear the trains a half mile from my house. I learned to filter them out within a week after buying this house and moving here.

The one thing I can’t filter out is neighbors blasting music at night. My neighborhood used to be so quiet. Then the houses sold and renters moved in. :frowning:

I work late, sleep in late AND work Saturdays. I’m generally up around 9 and I’d personally be happiest if everyone waited until 9 or 10, but honestly I would never complain if someone was mowing after 8. That seems fairly reasonable to me for all you freaks who get up at 5 or 6 and live in areas with awful weather ;).

Now if you had your gas-powered leaf blower out at 7 a.m., I’d likely just grit my teeth, pull a pillow over my head and still not complain. But I’d think you were a dick.

Boston, MA area.

With this current heatwave going on, it got above 90 around 9AM yesterday. The humidity here is horrendous, even without a heat advisory.

I haven’t heard a lawn mower all week, presumably because almost everyone’s lawn is now dead, mine included.
