How easy to setup your own Wi-Fi hotspot?

I’m finally getting broadband and have bought a second-hand 4 port router (a SpeedTouch 545) - the seller gave me pcmcia wi-fi upgrade also.

If I got another for my SO’s laptop I could surf elsewhere, say the park outside when it’s sunny (that’ll be a rare thing though).

FTSOTT, let’s assume that the connection speed is fast and that the range of the wi-fi is good, even through the wall and down to the ground (about 10m)…

How would I go about setting up a pay-as-you-go wi-fi connection for passers by?

I’m not too familar with Wifi hot spots and have never used one, but from what I’ve read I thought the whole point of most of them was to be free to attract business to the spot or general area that’s “hot”. I really don’t see how you’re going to meter wirelss network access for a “pay as you go” system unless it’s a rotating one time fee of some sort which edges into PITA territory for users.

If you have a wireless card already your hardware manufacturer may also have drivers available that will allow you to broadcast using what is known as a “soft access point”. I think this will be offered in future versions of Windows as well.

Here is a google search for it.
