How effective are escape slides?

As seen in Backdraft?

At one point in the movie, on of the Baldwin boys jumps on an escape chute out of an old warehouse and slides to safety a matter of seconds before the old warehouse bursts into a fiery ball. Are these slides a thing of the past? How effective would they have been if they were placed in strategic locations throughout the WTC?

I imagine a circular chute that spirals all the way to the ground floor. Too dangerous? Do they take up too much space in a structure to be economically viable? After the disaster last Tuesday, would it be worth it?

An escape chut probably wouldn’t have helped the people on the upper floors but it might have saved some on the lower floors. Also, people might be hurt during regular fire drills.

Just an opinion here, but the first word that comes to mind when I picture what you’ve described is “chafing”. Seriously, though, I would assume that such a chute would take up a heck of a lot of space in a building, and would be prone to becoming clogged with people who don’t slide as fast as others.
