I learned that tagamet/cimetidine can have antiviral effects. So while looking that up I saw that warfarin has some anti-viral properties. Have any studies been done on warfarin and cimetidine and compared results to traditional anti-viral therapy? Cimetidine & Warfarin only run $2-4/month so they’d be much more affordable than other retroviral amprenavir or AZT.
A Medline search reveals that warfarin is a low-micromolar inhibitor of HIV protease, which is likely much, much worse than other HIV protease inhibitors out there (saquinavir, ritonavir, indinavir, and nelfinavir). I don’t know the numbers, but people generally go for low-nanomolar inhibitors.
This article specifically reviews repurposing drugs for anti-HIV activity.
