How fast do you type?

83 by touch. But then I’ve been sick in bed for two days so its probably a bit slow right now.

47-ish WPM. I learned to touch-type, and mostly do the touch method, but never learned to use my pinkies very well, so often use my ring-fingers where my pinkies should go and end up skewed, then have to look down to readjust.

As I always say, “I was never hired for my typing skills.” And so it shall remain…

I did it once and got 87, then again and got 101. Seems about right. I wish I were faster but I just rely too much on the backspace key which kills me and stops me from getting into the 110’s or 120’s. I’m highly envious of those of you who can do 120+ wpm.

I got 47 wpm on the test linked above.

Crap, posted touch - 50 - 70 wpm, then took the test. Scored 73, and I could do better. Oh well.

This particular test was skewed a bit easy in that it’s all short common words. I’ve taken typing tests pulled from literature, essays, and light-science journals (far more uncommon words and lots more punctuation) and I typically am 60-70 on these.

Jesus, that’s nearly 29 keystrokes per second. That’s pretty impressive finger coordination.

Yeah, it broke. I took it again on an updated browser and got 90 wpm. Much more normal, heh.

I’d have said about 20 WPM, on that test I got

Words per minute (WPM) 30
Keystrokes 211
Correct words 33
Wrong words 6
You reached 149 Points so you achieved position 36025 of 56285 on the ranking list (last 24 hours)

So I was impressed with my mad skillz

Just tried again now that I’m mostly feeling better and got 99 WPM. (one error) That sounds more like it.

63 words. I’m disappointed that I’m slower than the median and the mode, and probably slower than average too. Are you all just lying?

Just to make the 60s feel better, I answered 20-35 before taking the test (thinking 25), and got 35 on the test. On a real keyboard instead of my laptop, my score might have been marginally higher, but I’m a hunt-and-peck specialist from way back (never got the hang of it in typing class), though it’s more my four-fingered typing style than my knowledge of the keyboard that’s holding me back. (I type with the middle finger of my left hand, the first and middle finger of my right, and I usually hit the space bar with my right thumb. Sometimes I hold the shift key down with my right pinky and hit the letter with a finger on the right hand, but not that often.)

78WPM here which seems about right once I actually got my bearings straight.

I can’t speak for anyone else, but my first job was typing. That was mostly 10 key (I was rated at over 20000 keystrokes per hour) though but then I was also a pianist which was helped keep my fingers limber.

Of course this test is just typing words; no punctuation, no paragraphs, special keys or anything else so my real speed isn’t quite as high as this test would say it is.

I don’t think this is a representative sample. IIRC, the average typing speed is something around 40 or so WPM, so your 63 wpm is certainly above average.

My guess is, people who think of themselves as good typists are more likely to come in and take a test like this than those who don’t, so these sort of results skew positive.

For my part, I’m totally guilty of that, but I’m still pretty surprised/impressed at how far from the top I am around here. I got 102wpm and in most company I’m the fast typist, but damn, you guys are fast.

I only got 72wpm. I actually think it was more difficult just typing random words, it’s easier for me to type cogent sentences and strike “enter” every now and again.

You guys are blazin’ fast!

I cannot tell a lie. I type 7000 WPM and just had to use a fire extinguisher on my keyboard.

Got 81 WPM on that test.

I’m an oddball in that I don’t keep my fingers on the home row. I just plop them down so that my left pointer is on R and middle finger is on E, while my right pointer is on the K key, middle is on L. Pinky fingers are on the shift keys, left thumb on the space bar.

This made my typing/CS teacher stare at the side of my head in middle school, but hey, I was blasting along so she didn’t smack me for it.
