I feel the same way about Subway; I don’t go there, but it’s not because of humanitarian, animal-rights, or any do-good purposes–it’s because the last time I went there, I got three big planks of bone in my sandwich!
I’m girl-cotting the Dixie Chicks. Ordinarily I wouldn’t buy anything of theirs 'cause I think they suck, but I will support them now. Free speech of all kinds should be encouraged, not punished.
My personal boycott of Blockbuster is not going so well. Every few months I cross the blue-and-gold line to rent a DVD or Playstation game. It’s always too expensive, a hassle in the store, and their selection of foreign/indie films is atrocious. No, I don’t know why I keep going in there either.
My personal boycott of WalMart has yet to bring down the behemoth, but I have faith! (If only my friends would do it too, I know we could really make a difference…)
Barbie is also still in business, and many types of toddler-girl clothes are still tasteless and slightly creepy.
Hmm, let’s see. So many corporations, so little time.
Nationwide Warehouse and Harry’s Carpet. Their ads SCREAM at me. I wouldn’t buy from them even if their products weren’t crapola.
Chrysler - $32,000 for a van that needed 2 new transmissions + 1 new engine in 4 years. (75k mi.) Chrysler informed my husband that “at some point the consumer has to take responsibility for the vehicle.” I’m a freaking soccer mom, Chrysler. You think I’m 4 wheeling in this thing? Stand behind your product or get the hell out of business.
AT&T - No, I don’t want your local distance phone service. Thanks for asking the 3,535th time!!!
1-800-CALL ATT Any company that has Carrot Top as their spokesman will never see a dime from me.
Barbra Streisand - She’s entitled to her politics but she offends me just every time she opens up her mouth.
I have faithfully continued my boycott of Ferarri. Didn’t buy a Ferarri last year, not gonna do it this year either. Sure, they try to act like they don’t care, but they’re gonna buckle soon, I can feel it.
My Blockbuster boycott has been going well…nearly 3 years now! It is mostly due to their late fee practices. Seems like no matter what time I return movies before the deadline, I am charged a fee!!! I decided to go with Netflix for DVD rentals. So far have had nothing but success with them, and they don’t charge late fees…you can keep a movie as long as you want. They don’t rent video games, though, at least not yet. They DO have a fabulous selection of movies, tv shows, documentaries, etc.
I won’t darken Blockbuster’s door again.
I boycott Blockbuster too, but for their crazy, hopelessly puritan moral sensibilities instead of their pricing scheme.
I haven’t been to KFC since a friend in first-year took sick after eating one of their barely cooked pseudo-chicken wings and missed three exams. Any restaurant serving food that’s so undercooked that it clucks in anguish as you chew it is not for me.
Shell - haven’t bought gas from them is a couple of years notably because of their actions in Nigeria.
Esso/Exxon/ExxonMobile/whateverotherfuckingnamestheyuse - Bastards want to oppose Kyoto and renewable energy? Fine, you won’t be gettin’ a dime of my cash.
Subway - I used to work at one and was treated like shit. Do I need a better reason?
Walmart - you all know the reasons.
Microshaft - slowly weaning myself off their infectious, closed-source garbage. Linux/Open Source is welcoming me with open arms.
Zoom Media - Not so much boycotting them, but am defacing their property and consciously ignoring their ads. I don’t need to see your advertising when I’m taking a piss.
Nike - Pay your workers a decent wage. Maybe I’ll buy your product.
Monsanto - Indirectly. Persuaded my grandfather who is a farmer to refuse any contract, seed, or service offered by this company. Also persuaded a friend to turn down a scholarship offered by this company. Don’t fuck with nature if you don’t know what it’ll do; dumbfucks.
Coffee Companies - that don’t expressly note that the coffee I’m gonna drink is brewed from beans that are obtained under fair trade agreements.
Major League Baseball-After the last strike, I said they’d never get another nickle outta me. And they haven’t.
WalMart is my only active boycott. I did buckle and go there to pick up fuel for my fondue pot as it was the only place open on Thanksgiving day.
ravesaint I applaud your tenacity. Know that I will be boycotting Porshe this year. I’m also boycotting in-ground swimming pools, trips to the Bahamas, Manolo Blahnik shoes, and Tiffany & Co.
Best Buy: Haven’t step foot in one since May 2001 when they lost mycomputer and hassled me about getting a replacement (which they found in August 2001). Hell, I don’t even like going to the same shopping center it’s in.
Circuit City: No shopping there since January 2002 when the idiot cashier told me they weren’t going to sell PS2’s anymore.
Auto Zone: Not since the summer of 1993 when they lied about the carb I ordered for my Beetle having a manifold gasket.
Barnes & Noble: Never have. Never Will. SInce they came into the local mall and forced out every other book, music, and video store (except, for some odd reason, FYE).
I haven’t bought any clothes or backpacks with advertising on them for 4 years now. I feel very weird now if I ever have to wear a shirt with some writing on it so that’s for life.
I haven’t bought a music CD in 4 years as well. That one’s easy to maintain though.
My boycott of known Scientologist actors and actressess continues unabated. I guess the last one was Pulp Fiction. I’ve even turned away free DVDs. Surprisingly this one hasn’t been very hard to maintain.
My boycott of Metallica has been going strong since the Napster debacle of 2000. I do, however, make a point of downloading mp3s of all their new songs and burning them to CD, then putting a list of them on my webpage daring Lars Ulrich to sue my ass.
The boycott extends to all CD’s featuring the individual members or cover versions of their songs. Now that Robert Trujillo has joined, I’m debating whether I should expand the “banned list” to include Suicidal Tendencies & the Infectious Grooves as well.
I’d sort of like to post mine, but the last time I did so, someone gleefully said they were going to buy as much of those products as they could. So I’d better not mention them on a general-interest board like this one.
Ah well, one of those companies has since gone out of business, although I don’t really know if the boycott had anything to do with it.
I’m still refusing to by any food produced by Yukijirushi (Snow Brand) after the mass poisoning a few years back caused by their corner-cutting.
I stopped reading the Daily Yomiuri newspaper because of their ultra-right politics.
And Major League Baseball hasn’t seen a dime from me since the '94 strike.
I used to boycott Ikea, but I forgot about it and accidentally bought a bookcase there, so I suppose the boycott’s over.
I boycott every place or business that I have a bad first-time experience with. I never bitch or whine about bad service; I just pay up and never go there again.
Also, I try to buy stuff that doesn’t have TV commercials. It’s usually much cheaper and obviously just as good. And I do my little part to rid the world of commercials entirely.
I didn’t post in the previous thread, but I have completed my personal boycott of Old Navy. They finally took those stupid ads off the air and started mimicing The Gap, which is what they do best anyway.
Nestle still. They’re still in business but they did back down on that evil demand in Ethiopia.
Shell still.
I have a problem with boycotting Borders because the books I would buy from them , I usually have to buy from Amazon instead. I try to buy books locally but at times some of the ones I want are only available from Borders in the city or Amazon. I plan to check out Powells though.
Anyone who describes KFC chicken as underdone is obviously not aware how it is cooked. It’s pressure cooked in boiling fat. It’s more likely that the chicken was sitting in a warmer for too long.
Hmmm…I know of them. I ordered a Mac OS 8.5 CD from them once (I think the delivery was a little pokey, but it’s been a while). But I’ve called them a few times for a variety of reasons and was always a little put off by the sarcastic/snotty attitude of the person I talked to on the phone. I wondered how they stayed in business with their off-putting phone presence.
If it’s not too nosy, how (in general terms) did they rip you off, and what Mac goodies are you planning on buying soon from somewhere else? (I love to live vicariously through other people’s Mac purchases… )
My own personal boycott: I am still boycotting the local Hooterville (midwestern town I am currently exiled in) TV news. I was pissed off one too many times by their “No other gods before football” news coverage.
I’m another one who will never darken the door of Wal-mart again.
I’m also off florist-shop flowers, after doing a little research into where most of them come from and how they are grown.
I won’t ever spend any of my money on a new diamond, though I may consider an antique one.
I vehemently refuse to ever enter an Olive Garden. Their commercials offend the hell out of me.
And the newest addition to my personal boycott list, The Dixie Chicks. I will never send any of my money their way again.
