How goes your personal boycott?

What a shame, it’s a beautiful place to visit. Might I ask why you’re boycotting France?

My boyott of Comcast has been going strong for the past year. It’s going even stronger this year because I just found out Stephen Burke, president of Comcast, is a Bush campaign contributor. This fact alone was enough to convince one of my co-workers to drop Comcast. Now, I’ll have to get rid of Verizon for the same reason…

My lifelong boycott of organized religion is as strong as cement. I don’t care if I burn in hell and neither should you.

Is this Sheehy Ford in Richmond? Just curious as to what happened - my dad’s good friends with the GM there. I have no opinion on them one way or the other.

Ava

Coors Beer

Mel Gibson movies. Not just “The Passion…” All of them. Open homophobe. Did you ever see the excerpt from an interview he did a few years ago where he stands up, points to his asshole, and says this is for taking a shit? Class.

Olive Garden. FAKE friendliness and microwave dinners.

To the extent possible, I boycott cities and states that have their own special Defense of Marriage Acts that are even more restrictive than the Fed’s. I also let their governments and tourism offices know periodically that I am doing so, and how much movey I spent on vacations and business elsewhere.

The national boycott of Cracker Barrel over their anti-gay hiring rules ended more than two years ago after the company set forth a new antidiscrimination policy. HRC referred to this change of policy as a “major victory.”

If you want to boycott them for the whole country kitsch chain food thing, though, please do.

As for my boycotts:
National/International Businesses: Nestle, Nestle, Nestle! I lose no sleep over it and Spunky the Wonder Dog didn’t seem at all fazed when he was switched from Mighty Dog to a more world-friendly brand.
Frank’s Red Hot Sauce: their new ad campaign is sufficiently offensive and judgmental to warrant a pledge to avoid their swill for perpetuity.

Local Businesses: The local Burger King because they do, in fact, have a racist skinhead working in their drive-thru](http://boards.straightdope.com/sdmb/showthread.php?t=221287).
The local Nissan dealership lied about work that was “needed” on my former vehicle. I will never buy a Nissan from them, and if I ever own another, I will never take it them for service.

Entertainment: Clear Channel in all of its overly pervasive forms, including my formerly beloved XM radio.
Any film featuring Scientologists, Sean Connery or directed by Roman Polanski.

Major League Baseball - When billionaires and millionaires are having a pissing contest over my money, it is time to take back my money.

Amazon - Short story is that their lying about shipping dates cost me money. Therefore, since I can’t trust them, they get no more of my money.

Bellevue Computers - Purchased a PC from them and a while later the power supply fried the entire PC. They refused to try and help me recover.

Wal-Mart - No personal experience, really, just reading about how badly they treat employees and I’d rather not support such a behemoth of a company.

I don’t know what it is about Wendy’s, but I have never gotten a correct order from their drive through. I’ve tried at Wendy’s locations in about 10 states, and many cities within those states, but not once have I gotten the order correctly from the drive through. It is just a bizarre, twilight zone experience, and I know I will keep trying, because I would just like to see if I ever get a correct drive through order. Strangely, they’ve never messed up when I go inside.

As for personal boycotts, I still won’t eat Domino’s pizza, even though the reason I began boycotting is no longer valid. But during my boycott, I just found better pizza elsewhere.

Forgot one…

Wilson Motors (A Ford dealership) - brought my car in for some warranty work, and due to some miscommunication ended up having to pay $600 to get it back. What put me completely over the edge, however, was when I was trying to figure out how I ended up with a $600 bill I discovered some items which were billed TWICE but with different part numbers, name and prices. If I can’t trust a company, I won’t shop there. Period.

Most of that Coke rubbish has been debunked by Snopes.

Isreal I like Jews, really I do. Very nice people. Gee, how did they get stuck with the Israeli government?

All Fast-Food Chains Not more moral reasons. It is simply more adventurous to eat at local places.

Iberia Airlines They had a strike while both my wife and I were flying. Nasty people.

Wall*Mart For the reasons already mentioned.

I’m currently boycotting Arby’s. They never get my drive-thru order right, and didn’t respond to my complaints.

My above-mentioned boycotts of Yukijirushi (they’ve since changed their brand name to MegMilk) and the Daily Yomiuri are still going well.

My boycott of Major League Baseball has gone less well. I didn’t buy any MLB products, but while I was confined to a hospital bed for three weeks there were at least two games on every day. I felt guilty about watching at first, but you can only stare out the window and do crossword puzzles for so long.

And after the airport/immigration nonsense I had to go through during my last visit, I’ve been avoiding travelling to the US unless absolutely necessary.

Just wanted to say that I have ordered from Powells before and had a good experience. They had the book I was looking for in stock and at a much lower price than my uni bookstore charged, even after shipping.

Robin

I’ve been boycotting the NFL since the Cleveland Browns move to Baltimore in 1995. While I haven’t hurt them much I haven’t missed them any either.

I understand there was some sort of international incident at this past Super Bowl though but of course I missed it.

2003: Hmm, let’s see. So many corporations, so little time.
Nationwide Warehouse and Harry’s Carpet. Their ads SCREAM at me. I wouldn’t buy from them even if their products weren’t crapola.

**2004 Update: The former is out of business. The other has toned down its ads. **

2003: Chrysler - $32,000 for a van that needed 2 new transmissions + 1 new engine in 4 years. (75k mi.) Chrysler informed my husband that “at some point the consumer has to take responsibility for the vehicle.” I’m a freaking soccer mom, Chrysler. You think I’m 4 wheeling in this thing? Stand behind your product or get the hell out of business.

**2004 Update: 12/2003 bought a 2004 Toyota Sienna. 1500 miles later and no new transmissions yet. This is a plus. **

2003: AT&T - No, I don’t want your local distance phone service. Thanks for asking the 3,535th time!!!

2004 Update: I still don’t want their long distance service since it’s included with my cell phone plan. But they quit calling! Shall I thank the Do Not Call registry?

2003: 1-800-CALL ATT Any company that has Carrot Top as their spokesman will never see a dime from me.

2004 Update: I haven’t seen Carrot Top in a long time. If I need to call long distance, I’ll consider 1-800-CALL ATT.

2003: Barbra Streisand - She’s entitled to her politics but she offends me just every time she opens up her mouth.

2004 Update: There’s an election coming up yet she’s been laying low. Perhaps someone cited her declaration that she’d leave the country if Bush were elected as a reason the Democrats lost the last Prez election…

And Mythbusters. Have you seen that show? It rocks!

Hey! SD is one of the Mythbusters’ weblinks! Cool!

Mine isn’t against a bg corporation, it’s against my local gym. I had a job I loved a few years ago (I’ve mentioned this elsewhere before I’m sure) I caught another member of staff stealing. Somehow or other she got a pay rise and a promotion, and I got the sack. I’ve since found out that the manager of the gym knows who this woman is, and knows that she was sacked from a previous job for her behaviour, and that he himself has interviewed her for a job (at the gym) and wouldn’t employ her. He’s on good speaking terms with the owner and manager of the place where I worked, and yet he never once opened his mouth and said one word to them about that woman, I can’t help thinking if he’d even said “jaysus, I’d never have given _______ a job” maybe she wouldn’t have gotten away with what she got away with … and so I can’t face the idea of paying that guy to re-join the gym (I used to go there 4-5 times a week)
