How good were the Pixies?

Try this: a listing of their (supposedly) complete b-sides. I actually have this cd–not their strongest stuff, but some excellent songs in “Weird at My School”, “Into the White”, and “Make Believe”, and the covers of “In Heaven (Lady in the Radiator Song)” and “I’ve Been Waiting for You”. Almost everything else is pretty forgettable, except one of those ‘manta ray’ songs–I think it’s the second one. The CD is an export here in the States (from the Netherlands, I believe), but not too hard to find.

What can I say that hasn’t already been said…they were THE band that was the soundtrack to my high school years. I remember in 9th grade a friend of mine “borrowing” his parents car (neither of us were 16 yet) and we went to the hip record store downtown where I bought my cassette copy of Surfer Rosa. God, I wore that tape out…probably played it 5000 times before it finally broke.

IMO, they were the most important band of the late 80s early 90s.

Just wanted to say I took your advice and bought a copy of “Up On The Sun.” What a great album!! I can’t believe I went the last 18 years without even knowing about its existence! Thank you!!!

I’ll definitely check out the others you mentioned. I listened to some tracks from “Too High To Die” and “Forbidden Planet” at a used record store today. I was quite disappointed. Needless to say I won’t be purchasing those albums. I’m hoping “II” and “Must Have Been High” are better.

Glad I could have been of help… I made a mistake in the posting though; the album I called “Must Have Been High” is actually the name of a really good Supersuckers album. What I was thinking of was in fact, “Too High To Die”. If you didn’t like what you heard from that album, I’d give it a pass. It was their big commercial album, and kind of a leap from “Up On The Sun”. I have a real soft spot for a handful of the songs on that album, but it may not be down your alley. “II” on the other hand was previous to “Up On The Sun”, and is more unpolished and frantic. Try it you’ll like it.

I also think Bossanova was the greatest Pixies album. The Pixies occupy one of the top 3 spots in my 5 Favorite Bands of All Time.

I cried when they broke up.

When I got accepted to UMass Amherst, I called all my friends and blared UMass at them.

Velouria has a theremin in it. Need I say more?

I went to see the old guitar player’s band, The Martinis, at TT and the Bear’s (a bar in Boston) years ago, and my then-boyfriend walked by this table where an older balding guy sat, animatedly talking over a beer with another fellow. My bf said “Dude. I think that’s Black Francis.” I said “No way, why would he be here?” So we just kept walking. Heard on the radio the next day that it was indeed him. I MISSED the chance to go up and shake his hand!
