How high is your home electrical bill?

Ours just went up to a budget payment of $236 per month. We have a small, 7-room ranch, 2 of which are heated with electricity, but we hardly use one of those rooms in winter.

Is this charge about equal to your bill?

Our most expensive - last August - was $256. We just paid our cheapest - $82. There are 2 of us in this house - 7 rooms, heated by oil, everything else including the well pump electric. We just got a new, high efficiency A/C, so I don’t expect this year’s biggest bill to be that high unless rates have shot up, which they may have.

Actually, when I use my kiln, also electric, I see a spike in the bill. I think I’ve used it 5 or 6 times in the last year.

I have a large 8-room ranch for a family of four, my wife and I and my kids. We have an Electric Dryer, Electric Oven, Electric Hot Water heater and Central Air.

We use CFL bulbs in 75% of our lights and I have a 6700w Solar Panel system on my roof. My bill ranges from $15 to a peak of $90. My Neighbors with similar size houses run between $120 & $320.

It sounds like your bills are high. What have you done to save energy? Where do you live? Can you make changes to get completely off the electric heat?

Whenever you buy new appliances, you should look for a high Energy star rating. This can actually pay for itself quite often. Even on things like new TVs. LCDs are very efficient compared to Tube, Plasma or DLP.

It is even more important with Washers, Dryers, Refrigerators, Air Conditioners, etc. Look into changing your light to CFL or LED bulbs where possible. The saving will add up. Look into programmable thermostats for your Heating and Cooling.

Mine is around $100-$170 Cdn a month, depending on how much we use the heat pump for heating/cooling.

I pay about $20 a month for my two room apartment. That’s basically refrigerator, TV, and CD player.

I have a three-room plus mudroom and bathroom apartment. Electricity covers hot water, appliances, lights. I pay about $58 a month.

We have a 2 br 2 ba apartment, around 1100 sf. LA DWP bills every other month and our bill seems to average about $150.

We pay on average $110 summer and winter. Gas heat in winter, window units in summer as needed. Since we live in a “holler,” we don’t need the AC usually til around August if at all. It stays much cooler where we are, even when the creek is dry due to being in the valley and all the trees.

Of course, I think this is awful high, since we paid an average of $70 when we lived in town. In the winter, we might top $100 due to having floorboard heaters, but it was the exception, not the rule. We have Co-Op electricity in the country, though :frowning:

We have pretty energy-efficient appliances, but they could be better (maybe someday we can afford to upgrade them!). We have been slowly switching to the CFL’s, and currently are probably at around 50% CFL.

Since we have well-water, we do save there, so that’s cool  Of course, I can’t drink that shite, but I never drank tap water, either.

LA DWP here also, but for a smaller studio apartment, and it’s about $30/month.

Antinor, are you saying that it is $150 for the (semi-monthly) bill, or that it averages to $150 per month? The latter seems pretty high.

Our electric is about $60-$80 a month, $80 is in the summer when we use the A/C and the attic fan.

We live on 3 levels (finished basement). Electric range, two refrigerators, freezer, washer-dryer, the usual electronics. Heat and hot water are propane. We don’t economize except for lights – if we’re not using the room, the lights are off. Same with the TV. If we’re not watching, it’s off. But the computer is on 12-16 hours a day.

Your bill seems high. I’ve heard electric heat is the most expensive kind, so maybe those two rooms are the culprit.

About 150 per bill, so around 75 a month. Sorry if that was unclear in my prior post.

Highest electric bill I ever paid was on a 2nd level flat I rented in Daytona (extra large 2 bedroom). It was old and cooled by an ultra-ineffecient roof top unit that was probably 30+ years old. My summer electric bills topped $300.

I have a 1040 sq. ft ranch in Ohio, with a basement, 1 person, gas heat. I pay about $70-80/mo but I am anxious to see what it’ll be now that I have central air. Probably ONE MILLION DOLLARS.

I have a way-too-big fridge and 2 computers that run 24/7 (not the monitors, though). I don’t usually have lights on but the ones that are on the most are those low-energy ones.

3 bedroom, 2.5 bath house here. Two people and about 1400 square feet.

Gas stove, clothes dryer, water heater and furnace. Air conditioning is standard electric. One normal fridge and one upright freezer.

Weather here is not quite as mild-mannered as San Francisco - typical temps are down to 40’s in winter and up to 100+ in summer.

Our “budget plan” monthly rate is $150. We’re doing something right - the utility recently had a conservation promo - save 20% for the month compared to one or two years ago and get another 20% off the bill. Part of that is actually using the programmable thermostat and a high-efficiency front-load clothes washer that uses less hot water - our water bill alone dropped by something like $30-40 per month with the new washer.

I pay CAD 70-80 every three months. Zero-bedroom studio apartment with The Usual Electronics, a dozen lights, a fridge and electric stove, Hot-water heating included in the rent. Use of electric washer and dryer separate in the laundry room.

The rate for electricity is allegedly 5.5c/kW·h from Toronto Hydro, but when all the other charges are added up, it works out to about 12.5c/kW·h. I know someone who had to move because they couldn’t afford electric heat; their bills were on the ortrder of CAD 800 per month. They were renting a very leaky townouse.

Small, 700 sq. ft. concrete condo. Everything’s electric, including heating. No A/C. I pay about $25-28 in the winter, and about $22 in the summer.

Budget $110 per month. 1200 sq.ft., 2 people, 2 computers et al. Air Conditioning is required here at least 9 months out of the year.

$150 per quarter (so $50 a month) for 2 people in a 2 bedroom apartment. Everything but the cooktop is electric.

About $60 or so a month for our 1800 SF Victorian. We have all CF bulbs and newer efficient appliances (except for the Beer Fridge - that was here when we moved in and we just kept it.)

$60 a month is pretty low for this area.

I pay about $15 a month in electric. I have a very small house and I don’t use my air much. I anticipate it going up to around $60 when I start using the air.
