How high-priced are ridiculously expensive desktops?

You forgot neon lights.

When you purchase a high-end item, be it a car, a home, a watch, a suit or whatever, you are paying for something that will last a good long time and is percieved as providing superior value.

Unless you are a certified Alpha-Geek™, when you purchase a high-end computer you are getting a commodity that will quickly decrease in value and ultimately have to be replaced. Beyond a certain point, a gold-plated computer makes as much sense as toilet paper made with gold foil. Sure, it’s expensive and ostentatious, but it exists only to be flushed once you’re done with it.

You mean like this?

I miss the BeBox. Such a cool idea. And the GeekPort.

I think the ads have got entirely the wrong idea: Desktop PCs at Low Costs; Desktop Computer Sales; Low Cost Computers.

I configured a quad-processor workstation for over $42,000, and a single-processor Dell for around £19,000. So, essentially, depending on what you want, you can go pretty high.

I don’t do anything to make money with a computer nor am I interested in doing so. A really good flight simulator might be interesting as would 3-D workings if I did not have to be a ‘geek’ to make them.

So a medium PC will do good.

What I want is a big pipe. 30,000k download and 15,000k upload. Something along those lines. I want to be waiting on the servers, not the other way around.

Well, some days on the SDMB, a 56k dial-up is 3 X faster than their server but you know what I mean.

I want to make mistakes really fast… At/in real time stream me a HDTV movie online that can show one movie on my 40" plasma TV and simultaneously be downloading two more in the background. That is the pipe and computer I want.

You need to move, then. I believe you can get those speeds as a consumer package in Scandinavia or South Korea. Here in the UK the best I can get is 24Mb down and 1.3mb up  and even then it only syncs at 18Mb
