So I’ve been watching *Big Love *since the beginning.
I thought seasons 1 and 2 were excellent, season 3 slipped a bit, and then season 4 just went completely off the rails. I know I’m not alone in this assessment. They started out with an intriguing premise and some interesting examinations of an unconventional lifestyle and the complications thereof; the choices of individuls and their consequences.
By the time last season ended it had become so soapy, schlocky, and over-the-top that I decided I just didn’t care anymore, and didn’t need to keep watching.
But… I happened to read a review in the paper that suggested the show is back to form, and since it’s the final season there will be some true resolution to the story. I’m skeptical, but I do remember how impressed I used to be with the show, so I waffled and never did delete the Season Pass from my TiVo. There are now 3 episodes sitting there yet unviewed, mocking me, daring me to watch them.
So, if you’ve stuck with it, convince me to hit “Play” or convince me to hit “Delete.”
Here is at least one more in agreement. I found Season 2 the most compelling, and “off the rails” is precisely how I would describe last season. Three episodes into the new season I’m bored at best, and at various moments actively annoyed by many of the characters, including Bill. All of them seem to be scheming or incompetent (or both), and just don’t really elicit much sympathy anymore.
It is much like the previous seasons - there are two or three major problems each episode that screws everything up and makes their plans a big mess.
I like the show, but if Bill wants to keep his family safe and together, he needs to stop all the “gotta make the whole world safe for Mormons and plural marriage all by myself just so my family can have a nice llife.”
He sees the big picture, but in trying to obtain his dreams, he is making himself and his family miserable, and hurting the good people who support him.
This season is the final season and it’s only 10 episodes long, I believe. We’re 4 episodes in to it.
I think you can watch the next 6 episodes and not have missed much, but can also get the “satisfaction” of having seen the ending.
If this was not the final season, or if there were 20 more episodes this season or something, I’d say you weren’t missing much. But even if your love of the show has waned, you might as well finish it.
