I’ve never posted here, but this might be the forum for this. I am an idiot you see, and when attemting to modify my profile I repeatedly got to the register screen. The thing is, I’m not cookied and it still knew who I was, so how does anyone register twice? I mean shouldn’t the system get them?
Many people on dial-up - myself included - have dynamic IP. If I disconnect and then reconnect, I’ll generally show a different IP than I was a few minutes before. There are also ways in which IPs can be “spoofed”.
While you can block access on a more global basis, this tends to affect all people coming through a certain point in an ISPs system. This happens quite often on IRC when complaints have been made to an ISP and they’ve done nothing about removing the particular pests net access.
If the admins really felt it was justified, they could block all access to the SDMB by anyone using my ISP. Fortunately, socks usually reveal themselves sooner rather than later, and such drastic action isn’t necessary.
The simple, obvious answer is that socks are easy and fun.
Also, it should be obvious that the ones banned aren’t the only names the poster uses. A high-count poster can say anthing at all with a sock (even such heresy as that socks are obviously easy and fun) since socks are expendable.
It really is easy to create a new user name if you are on a dial up. While I won’t go into specifics…anyone with knowledge of the net and how sites work can do it.
<Mangetout senses> while Reeder won’t go into the specifics; someone else is about to give full and detailed instructions and this thread is doomed, DOOMED!
