How is it possible to blind yourself with contact lenses?

Not that I’d expect a mean person who is also a bad manager to be receptive to constructive criticism… but, if multiple people are telling you you’re mean and a bad manager, maybe it’s not because we don’t have enough information. Maybe it’s because you’re actually mean and a bad manager.

Multiple (of the same) people seem to be missing parts of what I’m saying. Several people have also said they don’t see anything wrong with my choice. The people I work with in real life ok’d the firing and girl who recommended him apologized which she was not required to. This obviously is not her fault nor does she have anything to do with it. The only reason she got involved is because she contacted me because I believe he contacted her about it.

So, instead of jumping straight to firing the guy, why not request a doctor’s note to justify his absence first?

But if he can’t or won’t produce a note, and tries to come back to work good as new, you’re justified in letting him go.

Would not produce a note, as previously stated, and I think this was what he was doing. I got the impression that he overslept when he was supposed to meet with my boss.

Ok, but honestly, if I had a really scary emergency like that, and a Manager who is obviously not a “people person” had started grilling me and doubting me like that, I’d have hung up also. Before I said something really bad.

He didn’t even go to the emergency room until we suggested he do so. I also stated previously that I didn’t tell him I doubted him. All I asked is if he had a note and said it was strange that they couldn’t help him. No note and he hung up. That’s why I figured he was making it up.

People are acting like this guy had three days till retirement and the OP flushed his 401k. He was a brand-new food service employee and gave his manager attitude instead of an excuse. If he is blind, I’m sure he has better things to worry about than keeping a job with no health benefits or accrued time saved up. He’s moved on, so should the OP.

Seriously. This was pretty much a non-issue in the real world. Would have been a non-issue thread too. At this point I’m just repeating myself over and over.

You would have called your manager or had someone else—like the friend who got you the job—tell your manager you would be late. You would have come up with a more complete explanation in the first place. You wouldn’t have hung up in the middle of a conversation with your new boss. If not, I wouldn’t have felt sorry for you either.
