How is it that "Earth Girls are Easy" doesn't show up on more Greatest Films of All Time lists?

Last night I watched Earth Girls are Easy for the first time in over 20 years.

I figured, yeah this probably won’t be as good as I remember it being but it should still be pretty good. Wow! I did not give it enough credit! It is every bit of awesome that I remember it being! Definitely one of the best films of the second week of May of 1989! An absolute masterpiece of the 80s Musical Sci-Fi Sex-Comedy San Fernando Valley genre.

What’s not to love?[ul]
[li]80s Geena Davis in prominently displayed extensive bikini scenes! Sure, it’s Geena Davis, so yes her face is still funny looking but Oh-My-GOD! her body in that bikini!!![/li][li]Damon Wayans and Jim Carrey when they were young and hungry and in their prime (this was released a year before the debut of In Living Color)[/li][li]Jeff Goldblum as a swarthy Adonis in his big reveal after the make-over montage! Sure, it’s Jeff Goldblum, so yes his face is still funny looking but Oh-My-GOD! his body in those shirtless scenes!!![/li][li]Julie Brown is at her absolute BEST in this movie. For all you huge Julie Brown fans, if you haven’t seen this movie you must IMMEDIATELY put it on your must-see list. TWO Julie Brown musical numbers PLUS her hit song “I Like 'Em Big and Stupid” playing in a dance club in the Griffith Observatory![/li][li]Michael McKean as a surfer dude pool cleaner![/li][li]Charles Rocket as a douchebag![/li][li]A cameo appearance by ANGELYNE!!! Fucking Angelyne is in this movie!!![/li][li]A cameo appearance by Angelyne’s pink corvette!!! Angelyne’s fucking pink corvette is in this movie!!![/li][li]A wacky joyride scene with Jim Carrey and Damon Wayans during which they crash into the Randy’s Donuts giant donut in Inglewood while on their way from Studio City to Zuma! What route were they taking???[/li][li]Damon Wayans in an awesome dance-off scene! “Why be with a hero when you can dance with a zero?”[/li][li]Did I mention Julie Brown’s musical numbers? This is the movie in which she performs “I’m a Blond”!!![/li][/ul]

Anyone else agree that this is one of the greatest movies ever featuring Geena Davis and Julie Brown, Jeff Goldblum, Jim Carrey and Damon Wayans?

I’m adding this to my Must Watch at Least Once a Year list!
I just want to say that being chosen as this month’s Miss August is like a compliment that I’ll remember for as long as I can! I’m a freshman in my fourth year at UCLA but my long-term goal is to be a veterinarian because I love children.

Well, I hope you’re just being funny hyperbolic, because, while it is a fun movie, it ain’t top 100 material.

But, on the other hand:

Ya got me there!

PS I have Homecoming Queen’s Got A Gun in my iTunes rotation. Maybe I shouldn’t admit to that…

While I don’t think “Earth Girls Are Easy” is a great movie, I think that this thread has a great OP. Bravo!

Yes. Yes. It’s a great movie. Probably ones of the best sci-fi comedies of all time.
It’s VEEEERY LA, so I can see that if you don’t have love for the city, it might not resonate as much. (I love seeing the Valley Dupar’s in the background of the gas station scene.)

At the time Julie Brown was such a blazing genius that it seems impossible she was a one-album wonder.

Where’s VH1’s Behind the Music report on her?

It’s certainly good for a trivia question. “What are TWO movies featuring Geena Davis and Jeff Goldblum.”

We’re supposed to believe that Julie Brown shaves these guys from head to toe but they aren’t itchy?
I’m sorry, but the film loses all credibility at that point. I’ll buy that they are aliens from outer space that have anatomical compatibility with girls they pick up by the pool but this takes me out of the film. I just could not enjoy it. Every scene I keep wondering why they aren’t itching all the time. I was expecting science fiction not science fantasy.
Pshaw!

I thought she was hot even when dressed. It’s those Geena Davis eyes.

I have tried, and failed, a number of times to watch this movie all the way through. I’ve tried sober, I’ve tried drunk, and I’ve tried stoned. Twenty minutes or so in, I just can’t take any more. No quarrel with those who do enjoy it, but for me it just works too hard.

Yes, and it’s a very small bikini, too. And thin material.

While the humor was dripping I was initially asking myself “How did I not see this at least one?” Then I saw Jim Carey’s name. Yep got it. I still haven’t seen more than a couple of minutes of any of his early movies. His face from MadTV might as well have had “throatpunch me” written on it. Must resist temptation to see finally watch it…must resist…

Agreed on the OP. As for the movie, GD is a delight, but Jeff Goldblum’s tour de force of 80’s sci-fi stupidity remains Buckaroo Bonzai - Across the 8th Dimension

Perhaps out of a sense of guilty-pleasure embarrassment? Like, "I enjoyed this one more, sure I did, but I’m gonna group this with Citizen Kane?"

If we’re going to be giving credit for cameos, then we must also include Robby the Robot.

I’ll admit, I watched it again a couple of years ago, and like, totally enjoyed it.

I loved (the white) Julie Brown’s MTV show and thought she was genuinely funny. But *Earth Girls *was just terrible. Not good terrible or go-with-it terrible, but just fundamentally badly written, like an awful SNL sketch that goes on for 90 minutes. Actually, not even that good. More like an awful In Living Color sketch that goes on for 90 minutes. And I always though of Geena Davis as model hot, not funny looking at all.

I would use many words to describe Buckaroo Banzai, but ‘stupid’ is definitely **NOT **one of them. Them’s fightin’ words!!

Nah…Buckaroo Banzai was a dumb movie. It is the type specimen for working too hard at bring quirky and hip and ending up as a labored mess instead. It has always had a rather smug fanbase, but it isn’t much of a movie.

I love the movie. If not gloriously stupid, then what? Yoyodyne - the Future Begins Tomorrow!!

Laught while you can, Monkey Boy!

I love Geena Davis and Jeff Goldblum and I hated this movie

this is awful. one of the worst films I’ve ever seen
and I liked Transylvania 6-5000

Which Julie Brown? There are two.

Isn’t it “I’m a Blonde” ? That’s how she spells it several times in the lyrics:

I’m a blonde, B-L-O-N-D-E
I’m a blonde, don’t you wish you were me?

I remember several low-rent but entertaining 1980’s flicks from the time, alongside EGAE:

Killer Klowns From Outer Space
The Blue Iguana
Return of the Killer Tomatoes
Cannibal Women in the Avocado Jungle of Death

Gems, all.
