Half sticks of gum? At :11, notice how he keeps a finger on the 1 long stick to keep it from falling over or sliding around while he turns the box around. It’s clunky because he has to switch which hand he’s using to hold that stick. Then at :17 he closes the box and tilts it towards the ground, letting gravity pull all the half sticks towards the top of the box. When he opens it he squishes the box with his left thumb (:20), then carefully switches to his right thumb, then back to his left thumb so he can pull out the one long stick that we’ve already seen.

<insert some kind of rant about giving away secrets to magic tricks, which is tempered by the fact that this is a ridiculously simple trick, enhanced by the fact the OP is avoiding paying the guy for his DVD/book/whatever, compromised by the cheesy quality of the video>
