How is this trick done?

Guy disappearing in a box (video will start automatically)

The video isn’t clear enough to examine in great detail, but it’s still pretty cool.

The video footage has been digitally edited, without a doubt. If you watch the plant behind him (bad choice of background, as it isn’t completely static), odd things are happening, especially when the box falls, but there is also a noticeable pixel-shift when the box is nearly at the top of the screen; a whole block of pixels including part of the plant and part of the window, shifts ever so slightly to the right.

Not sure…perhaps he used the equivalent of a green screen. That is glue a green piece of cloth (doesn’t have to be green but some solid color) to the inside of the box. As you climb in step on the bottom of the cloth to hold it down then lift box so green cloth rolls out as you lift it so it is always covering you. If you filmed the room beforehand (without the box) you can then use video editing tools to replace the green with whatever was in that part of the picture before. As long as your camera in on a tripod and hasn’t moved you can do this easily. If you still wonder about the green screen try and catch your local weatherman…the map they stand in front of is really a green (or some solid color) wall. The map is put in by video equipment…note the weatherman always looks off tot he side and not at the supposed map on the wall. This is to see what you are seeing so theyt can point at the right parts.

As for the end you can catch a video cut. The box goes all the way off screen at the top. Simply cut the video after it is lifted off screen then reset the trick and drop a box afterwards with no one there.

Most of this is a WAG…ok all of it is but the last bit I am pretty confident of. The first part I really have no idea…truly a WAG.

I don’t think it’s green screen; the parts of him that you can actually see are there in that room, not pasted on top of it.

It’s an easy trick with the right software though; you just take some footage of the empty room and put it on a layer below the footage of the guy lifting a box (with the bottom cut out) up his body. Another mask or matte layer dictates which parts of the top layer will be ‘rubbed out’ to show the empty room in the layer below. The matte is itself a moving image, because it has to mask off progressively more of the top layer as the box rises.
Finish it all off by mapping a dark-coloured quadrilateral to the bottom corners of the box, creating the illusion of an intact, closed bottom.

The video has quite a low frame rate; it wouldn’t be too frigtening a job even to do the masking off by hand on each frame.

I’m sure this will seem really silly, but I thought the guy was just a contortionist who managed to fit himself slowly into the box while edited-out cables lifted him off the screen…

Especially since the box manages to land in the exact same spot as it started…

I think the idea is that the guy is standing in a green bag that comes out out the bottom of the box, and the bag is edited out, and replaced by the image of the room.

Would this work?
