How likely would a lion attack be in the wild?

An average person somehow appears in the middle of Africa. No people around for many many miles as far as he/she knows. A pride of lions (totally wild, never even smelled a person before) sees him/her. Do they treat the person like a weird-looking gazelle and attack, or are they a little more cautious, or do they just decide not to bother?

I guess it would depend on how hungry the lions were. If they were well-fed, they might just yawn at you and let you go. If they were really starved, you would be dinner in thirty seconds flat.

I guess the question is then, would a predator treat an animal as prey that it has never seen before?

I don’t see anyinformation about the existence of lionsin the middle of Africa.

I would totally bring a tiger for a bodyguard.

Relevant. Don’t going strolling about between 6 and 10 at night when there is no moonlight.

You’re right, I should have said “Sub-Saharan Africa.”

I guess it also depends on your demeanor. On one of those nature shows I saw a guy who liked to bluff animals that could kill him in a heartbeat. He just casually walked up to lions feeding like he was intending to steal their kill. And they ran off.

So what that tells me is, don’t piss them off, but do the best you can to look like someone who shouldn’t be trifled with.

As for the gazelle comparison, I think it’s more likely that lions would think you’re a type of ape, and lions generally avoid screwing with big apes.

In which case the lions would be entirely correct.

People who camp in (parts of) Africa have lion encounters at campsites the way USAsians encounter bears.

Dont run…it triggers a predators chase instincts.

We are, by far, the most badass species on the planet.

That was fucking awesome.

The trick is to wait until they are full.

Indeed, I’ve just nominated them for badassoftheweek - Warning don’t visit if you’ve got plans to do anything productive in the next few hours.

If you google this, there is a yahoo answers report from a zookeeper who claims wild lions will not see humans as prey animals in most cases and will just ignore you unless you threaten them in some way.

Anyone got a more reputable source for this?

Every Walmart should have a pride.
