How long before visiting anywhere in the world will be as easy as raiding the fridge?

Another satisfyingly perfect length thread title.

Will we ever reach a point where we can visit another country on a whim and it will be as cheap (or free even) and easy as, say going to the shop round the corner?
Currently, for those of us without the financial means and without jobs that require it, travelling to another country is a big deal… It is a highly stressful element of a holiday…waiting at airports, waiting on airplanes, being careful not to joke about what might be in your case, making sure your passport is ok and not about to expire in six months, taking the time off work, spending enough time there to make the journeying worth while.

If travel were more convenient then we wouldn’t have to spend a week in a place… we could pop there for a day, pop back in the evening… oh dear I forgot something, pop back again, pop back half an hour later.

World, you’ve given me 24 hour entertainment, Now I want free easy international travel… GIMME GIMME GIMME.

If the countries are close it is easy now. From IOM, Ireland and the UK are 30 minutes away. For me, one night in Dubai at 10pm I decided to go to Kuwait in the morning for 2 days. at 8am the next day I was in the air on the way to Kuwait.

Sure, from IOM if you want to pop over to Paraguay, it is a bit complicated… the world is still a big place.

Still… you probably should make your trip more than one day (to make the cost worthwhile) and that adds the complication of arranging accomodation. I’m sure it’s a very simple thing to book a hotel, but I’ve never done it in my life.

It would probably happen once transporters are commonplace or when jetpacks are fashionable.

You missed it. I think if anything, it’s going to get slightly more expensive and difficult from here on in.

Umm… yup. Google “Hotel Kuwait”. Get phone number. Call. Reserve a room. Show up.

I did spend two nights but have made weekend trips to Kuwait, Qatar, Bahrain, Oman and in Europe to Switzerland, Hungary, Germany. All quite easy.
