How long/much of a lockdown will people tolerate?

I imagine there will be some unfortunate scenes with the die-hard anti-science crowd where they all join in churches to hold hands, exorcise the demons, and prove there’s nothing going on. I like to imagine the ghost of Darwin sighing and rolling up his sleeves for a good old-fashioned culling of simpletons. But of course, they won’t remain isolated. They’ll come wandering into the streets, open-carrying their AR-15’s, coughing on the rest of us and daring the government to stop them. That’s when the ugly martial law scenarios are going to start popping up.

On various FB group I sub to, there are a LOT of complaints from people wanting to “open back up”.

Not one is from a worker who needed to get back to work- UC and the Covid check mostly has them covered I guess.

Not one is from a business owner needing some revenue- altho yes, there are quite a few from restaurant owners wanting people to take advantage of their take out.

A representative of the loudest are: a man wanting to use the HOA pool (called me a “coward”), a woman who wants to get her hair cut and another woman who wants her nails done.

Yes, these are the people who want to end the quarantine. :eek:

well then you and your your FB friends can stay home until you feel safe. Take all the time you need. You’ve worked hard, you deserve it. Take a year.

In the meantime those less fortunate who need to work will begin to do so in an orderly fashion.

In some ways, the slow opening of business in Georgia, Texas, and several other states is a litmus test for the United States as a whole. If protocols are lifted too early, it could lead to thousands of preventable deaths, epidemiological models show.

“If you lift the restriction too soon, a second wave will come, and the damage will be substantial both medically and economically. We don’t want to throw away the sacrifices we have made for weeks now,” Turgay Ayer, a research director for healthcare analytics at Georgia Institute of Technology, told The Daily Beast.

The main model cited by the White House coronavirus task force showed a more optimistic forecast until it was revised upward this week. The model, from the Institute for Health Metrics and Evaluation (IHME) at the University of Washington, now estimates a death count of 134,475 by August 4 — nearly double its late April projection of 72,433 deaths by August.

“Our data suggests that the partial reopening orders in some states have prompted a sharp increase in mobility behavior and decreasing social distancing across the nation,” Lei Zhang, the lead researcher for the University of Maryland study, told CNN.

South Korea, for instance, which previously had one of the largest outbreaks outside China, had relaxed most of its social distancing guidelines only to close thousands of nightclubs and bars on Saturday after a fresh outbreak linked to one man.

Researchers at Harvard’s Global Health Institute warned last week that the four states, Georgia, Texas, Florida and Colorado, lacked adequate testing capacity to safely re-open businesses.

Hey you sound just like that guy who called me a coward becuase he wanted to swim in the HOA pool.

To repeat- **NO ONE **in any of the FB groups was complaining they needed to get back to work.

Either they are working from home or UC and the Covid check has covered them.

I am sure there are people who need to work, but by and large, the covidiots that want to break quarantine are doing it to get their fucking nails done.

103 million people are unemployed and you think the big concern is the lack of professionally applied nail polish? Wow. You have an interesting collection of FB friends. Are you sure they don’t all want to buy shoes? Because I’m guessing they all have nice shoes.

Most of the people I know who had jobs in February and don’t now are eligible for unemployment, and with the additional benefits are making a comparable amount on UI as they made working, without the hassle of having to go to work. I see the same thing as DrDeth: people who want to go shopping and swimming and boating and to restaurants, bars, concerts, and entertainment venues of all descriptions. I haven’t seen much call for nail polish (although some for hair cuts), but I haven’t seen much clamoring to go back to work either.

I think there is some reading missing there because DrDeth was talking about the reckless astroturf protesters, not the minority that does not want quarateens that is not protesting like them.

Or something similar- shopping. visiting the pool, haircut, whatever.

Not *Friends. * I am talking Groups- local groups of people who live nearby, 99% of whom I dont know. The ones complaining are all, 100% trump supporters.

Everyone I know is either still working or collecting enough UC to make ends meet. Mind you, I am in CA, with a solid UC system.
