Now that Jeff Hanneman’s death is fading into the grey mists of yesteryears, I think the question can finally be asked.
Slayer isn’t going anywhere. It’s Kerry’s band, but it’s also Tom’s gig for as long as he wants it, and the two of them aren’t gonna stop making music, but how can they continue without one of their songwriters and players? Well, for the playing, they enlisted the help of fellow thrasher Gary Holt (of Exodus). I’ve seen them with Gary and they’re still amazing. There’s no question that he has the chops and the enthusiasm to help the band give memorable performances.
BUT he still has his own band. I was kinda disappointed with their last album but that’s mostly because I’ve never cared for Zetro’s vocals. He’s too whiny, not growly enough. But despite his presence, the album isn’t even close to a flop. The reason is that the songs are awesome. I’ve been saying it since about Shovel Headed Kill Machine: Exodus is the best thrash band in the world right now. And despite a couple of really solid Slayer albums, Exodus remains at the top of the creative heap, IMO.
BUT that’s going to present a problem eventually, I think. Eventually Gary’s need to write and record for Exodus will conflict with Slayer’s need for him to tour, perhaps. Or maybe Kerry decides to ask Gary to collab or contribute a song, and before we know it, they kinda consolidate into one band (one band that hopefully plays like 4-hour long thrash shows; that would totally fucking rock!).
Hey, maybe they could name the band in honor of Jeff; they could call themselves Dead & Gone.
I doubt it’ll happen; y’all know what I’m sayin’? But ddamn that would be cool.
