How long until we retire to 'Virtual Reality Stasis'?

I sent this to ‘Cecil’, however, the Teeming Millions may be able to assist:

How long until retirement homes are actually something to look forward to, something we save for and yearn for. By this I mean, how long until our bodies can be placed in ‘stasis pods’ and we are plugged in to a virtual reality world, which we can manipulate, to live out our days.

To be clear, I mean how long until technology allows complete immersion in to a virtual world via direct connection to the brain, whilst simultaneously other technology allowing for complete stasis of the body with an active mind. I imagine an active mind would still cause natural deterioration of the body (as opposed to deep space stasis as see in the movies which keeps you alive until woken up).

The idea that I could be old and frail, however, retire to a ‘stasis pod’ and be placed in a virtual world, which I create, and live out my days in my 20’s, buff, fighting aliens or whatever with superpowers sounds amazing. If the technology exists I would envisage complete virtual networks would exist where you could enter ‘friends’ worlds and have dinner, or go on a quest, or whatever!

Real people can also dial in for a virtual visit (so you don’t miss out on family/friend time who might visit you in the nursing/retirement home).

How long until this technology exists?

Probably way past when you’re dead, if ever.

That’s not really a singularity thing though. But I agree it will be a long time because the basic things we have to do to make that possible haven’t been achieved yet. Such as:

  1. Translating things that come from the brain in a way that can be broadcast on a screen.
  2. Sending things to the brain that can be translated into your brain’s native language and delivered to you as a thought or dream

So if you want to live to see that you’ll probably need to benefit from anti-aging treatments, which is an area where we are actually making some progress.
