The official reason is that cycling is not an engineering competition but a sport, and as such, the equipment should be standardized. If you allow different bike designs, bike races will look like this.

I want one of the Great Whites. Can you imagine getting out of the water and then hopping into one of those things?

No matter about the Big Wheel part, I saw some kid riding around on a John Deere the other day, that should pass for a bike. Thanks for the info scr4.

Yeah, and they offer no traction at all. You wouldn’t get up a curb, much less a hill.
