How Many and What Kinds of Stores Are Open 24 hours a Day Near You?

A lot of drugstores around here have fairly substantial snack / grocery sections. I’ve never looked for milk there, but it wouldn’t surprise me. You can’t get stuff like produce, or really most grocery store stuff, there, but certainly any kind of (non-alcoholic) beverage.

When I looked earlier, the one 24-hour drugstore was one I’d tracked down in late 2022, when I waited 3+ hours at not-especially-urgent care to get something prescribed for my COVID. And found that the clinic ran ALL their COVID scrips through a central office, that wasn’t open until 9 AM. Bizarro.

The local Walmart and Wegmans used to be open twenty-four hours but they both stopped during covid. (Walmart now closes at eleven and Wegmans closes at midnight.)

There are still some gas station/convenience stores that stay open twenty-four hours. And I think some laundromats.

I don’t think we have any twenty-four hour restaurants in town.

A couple of towns over there’s a self-serve used bookstore. You go in, pick out the books you want, and drop your money into a lockbox. And I believe it’s always open.

I think there are some gyms that are open twenty-four hours in nearby towns but none in my town. Including the one that was named 24/7, which I feel was blatant false advertising.

There are two 7-11’s in the county, that would be it. One is 20 minutes away, the other 45 minutes.

The gas stations are mostly 24/7, other than the small mom and pop places. HEB and Walmart used to be 24/7 but since COVID they started closing at 11 and never went back. Some of the CVSs are 24 hours, others aren’t. IHOP is the only regular restaurant open 24/7. Whataburger is always open, even the ones in small towns of two thousand people.

I was at one of them today, and it’s no longer 24 hours.

Today, I think the only 24 hour store open near me is a 24 hour pharmacy at Walgreen’s.

When I lived in Salt Lake City many years ago, hoiwever, I ha within a couple blocks of my apartment

– A 24 hour supermarket
– a 24 hour Winchell’s donuts
– two 24 hour gas stations
– a 24 hour convenience store
– a 24 hour diner

The joke, to me, was that SL:C was the kind of place that I would have characterized as rolling its sidewalks up early before I moved there. But when I visited someone in Denver we had a hard time finding anything open after 10 PM.

Of course, times have changed. There are a lot fewer 24 hour convenience stores and supermarkets anywhere.

I live in a small town in Hokkado, Japan and only the 7-11 is open all night. The other major convenience store closes at 9 pm and there are no restaurants or anything else open that late.

if its like any of the jpn 7/11s Ive seen on YT its probably better stocked than a lot of the restaurants … does your town have one of those vending machine huts also ?

It’s ok, but not like the convenience stores in Tokyo. Alas, no vending machine huts here, either.

My gym just re-opened a couple of months ago after a post-COVID rebranding, and it’s now 24/7, though it’s only staffed during normal business hours (it’s got card entry). As I’m insomniac, I’'ve started going in the wee hours. There are a handful of Shoppers Drug Mart stores in Toronto open round the clock, I’m pretty sure, but none in my neck of the woods*. And a few years ago, the closest Loblaws Superstore (grocery store) near me tried going to a 24-hour model. No idea if that was part of a national trend with Loblaws or just initiative by a local manager, but I don’t remember it lasting too long.

*Just checked before posting…there’s one about fifteen minutes’ drive from my apartment.

I forgot to mention that. My gym is a Planet Fitness, and they’re open 24 hours. There are quite a few nearby, but the one I go to is less than 2 miles away.
